Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, and from Dwellings.
Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the dwelling of George Osborne, Park Place, Wanganui, an open-face silver watch, an alarm clock with hole burnt in top, a shell-box with mirror inside, and a pair of gilt earrings with silver bird drops ; value £4. Identifiable.
On the 27th ultimo the dwelling of Sarah Hebberley, at Grey town, was broken into, and the following stolen: An open-face Geneva watch, washed with gold, flowered back, face and figures same colour, no glass, very much worn, steel chain with a threepenny and a fourpenny piece attached ; a large gold oval locket, greenstone centre, five gold pendants, “T. It. Proctor, High Street, Christchurch,” on inside ; a fine twistpattern gold necklet and a small locket, one side gold the other side maroon-coloured stone ; value £lO. Identifiable.

Assault with intent to rob Charles White Duckworth on the Sumner Road. Albert Pillow, committed for trial for shooting at Henry Ernest May, and for stealing spears, &c., from the Christchurch Museum, has confessed that he committed this offence also.
Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the hut of Robert Andrews, Pine Hill, near Dunedin, two sovereigns, four half-sovereigns, about 14s. in silver, a German accordion with three gold studs on one side and stone on the other side, a white-flannel undershirt trimmed round neck with blue wool, a striped cotton
shirt, and a nearly-new brown-tweed vest. Identifiable except the money.
Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the Clarendon Hotel’ Tiinaru, a new book called “ Peter Parley’s Manual,” about 8 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 1£ inches thick, bound with red cloth, title in gold letters on back and on the centre of cover; the property of William Lawrence Edwards ; value 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Duncan, about twentyfive years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build; wore darktweed suit and black-felt hat; deaf and dumb: frequents billiard-rooms. He went to Christchurch on the 20th ultimo, and left there for Kaiapoi on the following day.

The dressing-case, clock, and two smelling vials, stolen from the dwelling of the Rev. Charles Bispham, at Courtenay, have been recovered. They were found in a paddock near complainant’s house. i
Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from a bedroom in the Melbourne Hotel, Willis Street, Wellington, a white shirt, and a coloured shirt, open at back ; the property of James K. Little. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from the person of Samuel Ferguson, at Ashburton, a new silver lever hunting watch, compensation balance, maker Rotherham, London, whose name is on dial, and a silver cable-pattern chain ; value £ll 2s. 6d. Identifiable. '
Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the Ellerslie Railway Station, Auckland, a white-moleskin waterproof coat with greyvelvet collar, a piece of white cloth let into third buttonhole, tail stained from riding; the property of George Wagstaff; value £2. Identifiable.
Between the 4th and 6th ultimo the warehouse of MessrsOwen and Graham, Queen Street, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : 203 sticks of tobacco, a half-pint and two pint flasks of brandy, beehive brand label, 660 marked with pencil on the label of the half-pint flask, and 661 and 662 on the labels of the other flasks.
Stolen between the 20th and 25th ultimo, from the house of John McComb, Big Hill, Beaumont Road, a kangaroo-skin stock-whip, about 12 feet long, wood handle, half white, the other half dark colour, lead in butt; value £l. Identifiable.
Stolen between the 3rd and 20th ultimo, from the shop of Robert Tudehope, Upper Queen Street, Auckland, an iron stock, used for cutting screws on the end of brass pipes ; value £1 ss. Identifiable.
On tho 15th ultimo the dwelling of David Hughes, at Portobello, was broken into, and the following stolen: A halfsovereign, 19s. in silver, two black-and-brown Crimean shirts, new; three pairs of brown-woollen socks with white toes, 1 lb. of tobacco, and 7 lb. of sugar; value £4. Shirts and socks identifiable.
Stolen about the 20th ultimo, from the dwelling of John Flanigan, Leith Street, Dunedin, an open-face silver lever watch, No. 2143, steel hands, hour-hand broken, no glass ; value £4. Identifiable.
Stolen about the 20th ultimo, from a house in the Botanical Gardens, Dunedin, a grey prison jacket, HMG 102 in white letters on back, and a pruning-knife with large-blade and deer-horn handle ; the property of the Government; value 14s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Mason, who was discharged from the Dunedin Gaol on the 18th ultimo.
Stolen about the 15th of August last, from the Post Office at Reefton, three letters, written by Mrs. Lloyd, Mrs. Neagle, and Mrs. Shanks, addressed to Mrs. Peake, Melbourne, each containing a£l note on the Bank of New’ Zealand. Suspicion attached to David Richard Wooton, who had been employed as messenger and letter-carrier in the Post Office. He has been committed for trial on three charges for stealing other letters.
Stolen on the 20tli ultimo, from the Post Office at Temuka, a letter addressed to P. B. Boulton, Sheep Inspector, Christchurch, 1 containing thirty-two penny postage stamps. Identifiable. From the time the letter was posted until it was missed William Smith, the Sub-Postmaster, and Frederick Oliver, the Telegraph Messenger, were the only persons who bad an opportunity of stealing it.
