Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Robert Blackwell, alias Black Bob', charged on warrant with stealing a hen, the property of John Potter, has been arrested by Detective John Neill, Timaru Police, and sentenced to two months’ labour.

John Jenkins is charged, on warrant issued by tho Masterton Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, at Masterton, about the 12th ultimo, of a two-horse brake, with pole and shafts, and three sets of harness; the property of John McDermott; value £45. Description: A native of New Zealand, a ploughman and labourer, twenty-eight or thirty years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, medium build, brown hair, large reddish beard and whiskers, good-looking, walks stooped with his head down, speaks through his nose ; wore light grey tweed suit. He was seen at Greytown on the 14th instant. He rented the brake and harness in May last for six months from Mr. McDermott, and sold them at Greytown on the 12th ultimo to Samuel Garrity for £l2.

Edward Long, alias Fred, is charged, on warrant issued by the Oamaru Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, on the 19th instant, at Waitaki, of a £5 note; the properly of John Johnson. Description : A Cockney, twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slight build, dark complexion, dark hair, very small whiskers and moustache, Roman nose with a fresh scar on bridge. He left Oamaru by train on the 19th instant for Dunedin.

Stolen between the Ist and 14th instant, from the Chief Post Office, Dunedin, the following letters addressed to Messrs. Rcnshaw and Denniston, merchants, Bond Street, Dunedin, viz. : One from James Wilson and Co., Water of Leith, containing a promissory note; one from R. F. Cuthbertson, Riverton, containing a £1 note; one from George Cliffe, Timaru, containing a crossed cheque, No. 145, for £SO, drawn by George Cliffe on the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru ; one from McLean Brothers, Dunedin, containing an invoice ; two from George Taylor, Christchurch; one from A. Solomon, Milton, containing an acceptance ; one from Mrs. R. F. Cuthbertson, Riverton, addressed to Mrs. Denniston ; and one from Mrs. McLaren, Dunedin, addressed to Miss Walker, care of Renshaw and Denniston. Identifiable, except the £1 note.

A registered letter, posted at Waipawa on the 24th of April last, addressed to Peter Riordan, care of G. Hunter, Porangahau, has not reached its destination, and it is supposed has been stolen. It contained two £5 notes and four £1 notes on the Bank of Australasia, a half-crown) and a twelve

months’ deposit receipt for £BS, issued at the Bank of Australasia, Waipawa, in favour of Peter Riordan. Deposit receipt identifiable. It is supposed that the letter was stolen from the Poi’angahau Post Office. Suspicion attached to Edward C. Young, who had access to the sorting-room. Description: English, a clerk, thirty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, light-brown hair inclined to curl, fair beard, whiskers, and moustache, bloated features ; fond of drink.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, at Ormond, a pigskin saddle, knee pads and flaps in one piece, one of knee pads flat, two web girths, german-silver irons, breastplate with plated buckles, and a grey saddle-cloth with coloured stripes, ripped in centre; the property of Alexander Parsons ; value £9. Identifiable.

Stolen about the loth instant, from Manners Street, Wellington, a wheelbarrow with iron wheel, branded JP ; the property of John Plimmer; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from a clothes-line at Ingestre Street, Wanganui, four white-linen shirts and two linen napkins; the property of Freeman R. Jackson; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 24th ultimo, from the stables of the Railway Hotel, Amberley, two nearly- horse-covers, no surcingle to one ; the property of Thomas Thornton. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Bth instant, from the premises of John Griffin, Hope Street, Dunedin, a roast leg of mutton, a large dinner plate, a saucer, and a quarter ton of coals. Plate and saucer identifiable.

Stolen between the 25th ultimo and 16th instant, from the goods shed of James Butcher, Queen Street Wharf, Auckland, twenty-four 1-lb. tins of salmon, six 1-lb. tins of Hobart Town jam, aud two 1-lb. tins of preserved meat; value £1 10s.

Stolen about the 12th instant, from John Cuff’s livery stable, Dee Street, Invercargill, a very large blue napped cloth overcoat, lined with stuart-tartan plaid, large black-horn buttons on each side, a slit with two buttons in back; value £4 10s. Identifiable. Suspicipn attached to William Willis, English, a groom, about fifty years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, very stout build, fair hair turning grey, clean shaved, flat or broken nose.

Stolen on the 19th instant, from a clothes-line in Wyndham Street, Auckland, a grey petticoat; the property of Mrs. J. Pearce ; value ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th instant, from off the dog of Ralph Wvlde Brown, at Parnell, a registered dog-collar for the current year, No. 1626 ; value ss. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 7th instant, from the clothes-line of John Simon, Castle Street, Dunedin, a large twill calico sheet, MS marked on one of the corners ; value 7s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from Steep Street, Dunedin, two white ducks, one with black spots, and a grey duck with white neck; the property of a Mrs. Christie ; value 12s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 21st of May last and the 16th ultimo, from the stable of Joseph Taylor, at Papanui, an old rusty iron racket for boring railway rails, a large iron screw-jack about 1251 b. weight, and two large iron pulley blocks ; value £6 15s. Blocks identifiable ; the identification of the other articles doubtful.

Stolen between the 14th and 19th of April last, from the platform of the railway station, Invercargill, a wooden box, 2 feet by 18 inches, locked and lashed, painted faded-blue colour, containing a grey lustre dress, black-silk sleeves, brown jacket, and light-coloured skirt, an album containing family photographs, and a book ; the property of Rosetta Chesterman ; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th instant, from the cabin of the schooner ‘‘ Prince Rupert,” at Dunedin, a tin box about 15 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 6 inches deep, containing about thirty £1

notes and a number of papers ; the property of Maitland Grant. Box and papers identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Milner, who was on board the schooner about the time the box was stolen. Description: A native of the colony, thirty-two years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, whiskers, and moustache.

Stolen on the 14th instant, from off the carriage of Thomas Hayes, at Wanganui, a carriage lamp, a hole in the lower part of socket, which was stopped with a cork rolled in paper; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from Athol Place, Dunedin, three white ducks and a dark-brown duck with yellow beak; the property of John Grant value 12s.

Stolen between the 26th and 30th ultimo, from the parcels office at the railway station, Oamaru, a bag containing seven pairs of' white blankets, half-worn, seven feather pillows, a counterpane, a woollen bolster, 3 yards of pink ribbon, a black dress, two sheets, a quantity of girls’ underclothing, and 9 yards of dress material; the property of Robert Corbett; value £lO ss. Identifiable. The name Mrs. E. Carey,” written on a slip of paper, as pinned to the bag.

Stolen about the 18th instant, from the person of Cornelius Murphy, on board the steamer “ Southern Cross,” between Lyttelton and Wellington, six sovereigns. Suspicion attached to a man known as “ Harry,” English, a cook, about thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, slight build, dark complexion, dark hair, moustache, and goatee, cheeks shaved; wore grey clothes and sealskin cap.

The dwelling of the man, name unknown, suspected of stealing a leather bag, containing money, &c., from the Dunedin Railway Station, the property of Robert Neill, was searched by the police, but none of the stolen property was recovered. His name is Christopher Hanna, of Green Island.

Stolen between the 7th ultimo and 7th instant, from a schoolhouso at Halcombe, two green-linen window blinds with racks and pulleys, two carpenters’ squares, a large saw, three chisels, two screwdrivers, a keyhole saw, and a spade; the property of John Angel Ilaugucz ; value £3 Bs. 6d.

Stolen about the 21st instant, from off a dray at Waipukurau, a black-and-yellow rug and a grey-and-yellow rug; the property of Julia Farmer. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man named Harris, a bullock-driver, about forty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, whiskers turning grey, chin shaved ; wore grey clothes. It is supposed he has gone towards Porangahau.

Stolen about the 15th instant, from a clothes-line, at Green Island, a new large white-cotton quilt, hemmed with round raised fancy-work, the property of Alexander Sickles, value £1; and a partly-worn white-cotton bed-quilt., of same pattern, the property of John Mason, value 18s. Both identifiable.

Stolen between the 15th and 18th instant, from Union Street, Dunedin, a black-and-white duck and two dark-grey ducks; the property of Robert Burns; value 7s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 10th and 14th instant, from Moray Place, Dunedin, an old stonemasons’ iron axe, about 18 inches long and about 2j inches broad at each end; the property of Thomas Thompson and Co.; value Is. Identifiable.
