Deserters from Merchant Vessels.
Walter Watson, Stephen Wallner, and Leonard Woolford are charged with deserting, about the 6th instant, from the barque “Renfrewshire,” at Port Chalmers. Description: Watson is English, seventeen years of age, 5 feet high, medium build, fair complexion and hair, no hair on fuee, good-looking ; wore pilot coat, dark-tweed trousers, and blue-cloth cap, with badge and gold band. Wallaer is English, seventeen years of age, 4 feet 5 inches high, medium build, dark complexion and hair, pimples on face. Woolford is English, seventeen years of age, 4 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion and hair, full features. James Alexander and Frederick Parlon are charged with deserting, on the Ist instant, from the barque “ Rokely Hall,” at Port Chalmers. Description : Alexander is Scotch, twentysix years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, slight build, dark complexion ; dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; stooped slouching gait. Parlon is a German, thirty-two years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight build, dark complexion ; brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ; sulky appearance. (See Police Gazette, 1878, page 122.) Leonard Martini and August Stromer, charged with deserting from the ship “ Panmure,” at Port Chalmers, have been arrested by Sergeant John Rooney and Constable Waite Bayfield, Palmerston South Police. (See Police Gazette, 1878, pages 127 and 128.) August Kelly, John W. Ilordyke, James Douglas, Martin Whelan, John McGrath, Thomas Brown, and Thomas Greaves, who deserted from the barque “ Stracathro,” at Port Chalmers, are not to be arrested. The master of the vessel has shipped other hands, and docs not now require them.
Robert Johnson and Jolm Mulligan are charged with deserting from the barque “ Harrington,” at Port Chalmers, about the 16th instant. Description: Johnson is a Swede, twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, round full face, small chin ; brown hair, whiskers, and moustache. Mulligan is English, nineteen years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, brown hair, very little (if any) hair on face.
William Martin and Charles Oberg are charged with deserting from the barque “ Isle of Erin,” at Port Chalmers, about the 19th instant. Description : Martin is an Austrian, thirty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, dark complexion ; dark hair, whiskers and moustache ; upper part of cheeks shaved, dark eyes, good-looking. - Oberg is a Swede, thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, slight build, fair hair, very fair moustache, no beard or whiskers, light-blue eyes, the joints of middle finger of one hand stiff. .
