Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Stolen on the 24th of April last, from the coat pocket of Robert Beattie, at Geraldine, a cheque (No. 926) for £176 3s. 9d. on the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru, drawn by Julius Mindleson, of Temuka, in favour of Robert Beattie. Suspicion attached to James Tucker, English, a labourer, twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion ; light brown hair, whiskers, and moustache; chin shaved ; wore black monkey jacket, tweed vest, moleskin trousers, black-felt hat, and watertight boots. The boy Wells, charged with having stolen a purse and money, the property of Frederick Morgan, from on board the cutter “Lee,” has been arrested by Constable James William Moar, Panmure Police, and sentenced to twelve months’ labour.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from a cab in Frederick Steeet, Dunedin, a new driving whip, dark-brown whalebone handle, 6 feet long, six or seven imitation silver ferrules on handle, long thin lash ; the property of Thomas Richards ; value 12s. 6d.

Stolen about the 10th ultimo, from a house in course of erection in Hereford Street East, Christchurch, a claw hammer, J.H. stamped on both sides of hammer and on handle; the property of John Harrott; value 6s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 20th and 22nd ultimo, from the wreck of the ship “ Ann Gambles,” at Te Wai Point, Bluff Harbour, six bolts of ship canvas, some of them marked on centre with a red-and-blue stripe, others with a black stripe, value £2O; eight dinner knives with black-and-white handles, and eighteen german-silver forks, value £5 ; six delf mugs, several white plates with blue rims, and about fifty-six tins of preserved meat; the property of John Morgan. It is supposed that the property has been stolen by sailors on board cutters going to Stewart Island.

, Stolen about the Ist ultimo, from the premises of George Carruthers, Nine-Mile Road, Westport, a ham about 20-lb. weight and two pigs’ heads ; value £1 15s. Ham identifiable.

Stolen about the 24th ultimo, from the clothes-line of Louis Solomon, in a right-of-way off George Street, Dunedin, four new calico ladies’ night-dresses, twelve half-inch plaits on breast (machine-made), and nine nearly new white pockethandkerchiefs; value £1 17s. Night-dresses identifiable.

Stolen about the 14th ultimo, from tho premises of George Hardwick, Sliortland Street, Auckland, a large round zinc washing tub, about 18 inches deep ; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Btli ultimo, at West Eyreton, Canterbury District, a two-gallon jar, containing two gallons of brandy; the property of the Government. William Major, a farmer residing in the neighbourhood, suspected.

Stolen about the 11th ultimo, from a cabin on board the steamer “ Charles Edward,” at Westport, a £1 note ; the property of Hunter Regnart. Suspicion attached to Frank Shaltz, a Swede or German, employed on board the steamer.

Stolen during the night of the 18th ultimo, from the fowlhouse of Patrick Lee, Leith Street, Dunedin, four cock and three hen turkeys, grey common breed ; value £2 12s. Gd.

Stolen between the 23rd and 25th ultimo, from St. Leonards Railway Station, near Dunedin, two common oil drums, containing a gallon of raw oil and four gallons of boiled oil; the property of Basil Sivewright; value £1 4s. Drums identifiable.

Stolen about the Ist ultimo, from the stable of Kobert Graham, at Ellerslie House, near Auckland, a large saddle nearly new, pigskin scat, chafed on right side, large knee pads, oval stirrup-irons, a common strap substituted for a - stirupleather ; value £5 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 7th and 14th ultimo, from an unoccupied house at Okarito, Westland District, a five- or six-gallon boiler, value 155., and a book called Fiery Cross,” value Is.; the property of Caroline Brett. Book identifiable.

Supposed stolen between the 24th and 27th ultimo, from on board the steamer “ Rotorua,” between Lyttelton and Auckland, a large brown-leather- portmanteau, with brass mountings on handles, containing a maroon-coloured silk dress with white maltese lace trimming, value £3O ; a new handsome Englishmade black-silk dress, value £3l 10s.; a black-velvet jacket trimmed with black maltese lace, value £ls 15s. ; a largo goldmounted jet brooch, containing Mr. Nathan’s likeness, an ovallink gold-mounted jet necklet with a man’s head inside each link or circle, and a pair of gold-mounted jet earrings with two drops, value £35 ; a New York pea-jacket, value £3 ; a child’s New York white dog-skin jacket, value £2 ; several white and coloured shirts, collars and cuffs attached; a quantity of ladies’ under-linen marked L.N., a straw-worked fancy basket, an English prayer-book, a large quantity of skeins of variegated silk, a fancy lace antimacasser, and several other articles; the property of Lawrence D. Nathan.
