The well grown 18-month-old heifers shown here with some older cows were wintered entirely on silage and pasture. At the time of the autumn flush of pasture, which can be a danger period because of unthriftiness, some top-quality hay or silage or even concentrate is necessary on many properties to ensure that calves go into winter in good condition. Well reared yearlings do quite well on silage and hay plus some grass during winter and are ready for mating at the correct time.
