Lambing Estimates for 1958 Season

A Dominion lambing percentage ' exceeding 100 was recorded in the 1958 season, the first time that this figure has been reached. As the total of breeding ewes was also a record at 30,877,548, the total number of lambs born, 31,039,081 is substantially higher than from any previous lambing. The record land district lambing was again

recorded in Southland with 112.4 per cent. The South Island percentage was 106.32 and the North Island 95.43.

Totals for counties, districts, and the Dominion are set out in the following tables, which have been contributed by the Animal Industry Division of the Department of Agriculture.

Some of the above figures for breeding, ewes have been adjusted to the nearest 100, where an estimated figure only was available.

The following table shows the estimated lambing for the North and South Islands for 1958 and the previous 5 years and the number of lambs tailed for the seasons up to 1956.
