Though New Zealand's native flora shows great diversify, species with large brightly coloured flowers are rare. An exception is Clianthus puniceus, shown on this month’s cover, which has long been a favourite ornamental shrub for home gardens. It is sometimes called the red l(owhai or fyafya beal?. Clianthus must always have been rare in the wild state, and according to some authorities would have become extinct had the shrub not been cultivated by the Maoris and later by European settlers.
