This Month's Cover
With the rapid development of agricultural aviation it was obvious that for work in rugged and broken terrain there would be a place for the helicopter. Its manoeuvrability and ability to fly at very low speeds and altitudes, the operator's excellent field of view, and its need of only a small clear area instead of a full-scale airstrip from which to operate are advantages that encourage its use where orthodox fixed-wing aircraft would be handicapped. In spraying for weed control, as in the cover illustration, closeness of the machine to the ground minimises evaporation, and downward turbulence created by the rotor blades assists distribution and penetration of spray.
