A Jumper with Small Cable Pattern
NEAT and unusual is an apt description of the jumper with the small cable pattern illustrated here. Instructions for making it are given below. ABBREVIATIONS: K., knit; p„ purl; st(s)., stitch (stitches); foil., following; patt., pattern; rep., repeat; si., slip; p. 5.5.0., pass slipped stitch over; w.r.n., wool round needle; inc., increase; cont., continue; fin., finishing; beg., beginning; dec., decrease; rem., remaining. . Materials: soz. of 3-ply wool; 2 No. 9 and 2 No. 4 knitting needles. Measurements: Bust, 34in.; length, 18|in. Tension: About 6J sts. to lin. over patt. The Back Using No. 9 needles, cast on 92 sts., and work in k. 1, p. 1 rib for 3in. Change to No. 4 needles and work in the foil, patt.: — Ist row: P. 2, * k. 3, p. 2, k. 3, p. 12. Rep. from * 3 times more, k. 3, p. 2, k. 3, p. 2. 2nd row: K. 2, * p. 3, k. 2, p. 3, k. 12. (side inc.), p. 11, * k. 3, p. 2, k. 3, p. 12. Rep. from * 3 times more, but work twice into last st. 14th' row: K. 13, * p. 3, k. 2, p. 3, k. 12. Rep. from * 3 times more, ending k. 13 instead of k. 12. 15th row: Change to No. 9 needles. P. 13. Rep. from * of 3rd patt. row 3 times, ending p. 13 instead of p. 12. 16th row: K. 13. Rep. from * of 4th patt. row 3 times, ending k. 13 instead of k. 12. Change to No. 4 needles. Rep. 13th to 16th rows twice more, but inc. 1 st.
each end of 17th and 21st rows, and allow for the extra sts. in the foil, rows. These 24 rows form the patt. Cont. in patt., inc. each end of every 4th row, working the inc. sts. into reverse fabric until there are 112 sts., then cont. straight, working across all sts. in patt. until work measures 17-jin., fin. after a wrong-side row. . Shape Top of Sleeve and Shoulders Cast off 2 sts. at beg. of next 4 rows, then dec. 1 st. at each. end of every row until 92 sts. remain. Cast off 15 sts. at beg. of next 4 rows. Cast off rem. sts. The Front Work exactly as for back until work measures 16in., fin. after a wrong-side row. Next row: Patt. .51, cast off 10, patt. to end. Cont. on last set of 51 sts., dec. 1 st. at neck edge on next 7 rows, then on next 4 alternate rows, but when work measures 17|in., fin. at side edge, work thus: — Ist row: Cast off 2 sts., patt. to end. . 2nd row: Patt. to end.
Rep. last 2 rows once more, then dec. 1 st. at sleeve edge on next & rows. Now cast off 15 sts. at beg. of next 2 alternate rows. Rejoin wool to neck edge of other sts., and work this side to match. The Armbands Join shoulders together, then measure 6in. either side of shoulder seam and mark with pins. Using No. 9 needles, pick up and k. 84 sts. between pins and work in a k. 1, p. 1 rib for lin. Cast off in the rib. The Collar Using No. 9 needles and holding right side of work toward you, pick up and k. 120 sts. all round neck edge, beg. at centre front, turn. Work in k. 1, p. 1 rib for 2 Jin. Cast off in the rib. To Make up Press work on wrong side with a warm iron and a damp cloth. Sew up side seams. Turn over collar.
