With the availability of aircraft for topdressing and of heavy machinery for cultivation, land development in New Zealand is reaching out to areas previously considered unfruitful. One such area is the extensive tract of pumice country near the centre of the North Island round Waiouru. Portion of this high-altitude area (over 2000 ft. above sea level) that is being converted from native tussocl( to sown pastures is shown on this month's cover, which has been • reproduced from a colour photograph byNational Publicity Studios. Z description of the methods being used and a history of the country are given in an article on page 3 of this issue.
