Pasture and Stock Management on Hill Country BEFORE beginning extensive topdressing programmes hill-country farmers would be well advised to consider whether or not their farm management can be adjusted to make the best use of such topdressing. Points to be watched are the adequacy of subdivision of the property in relation to stock management, the supply of extra stock to cope with the extra feed that will be produced, and the present state of the pastures. If clovers are absent or if only lowproducing annual species are present, consideration should be given to oversowing suitable species such as the better strains of white clover or subterranean clover To get the full value from topdressing, improvements in stock management will be required on most properties. Controlled grazing management is essential for maximum pasture production. For most farmers it will be better to start hill-country topdressing in a small way and make a job of it; give adequate fertiliser, control weed and scrub growth, and fence and oversow with clover seed if required. Far too often the topdressing of extensive areas without consideration of the matters that go hand in hand with topdressing has led to the wasting of valuable fertiliser or at least to the obtaining of only a small fraction of the possible benefits that can result from its use.
