LAMBING ESTIMATES FOR 1948

Dominion Percentage Second Highest on Record

By the Livestock . Division.

'T’HE estimated lambing percentage of the Dominion for the 1948 season is 92.72, which is the second highest on record and is only .39 below the record figure of 93.11 for 1947. The previous best figure was that for 1945, when the estimated percentage ; was 92.64. The percentage estimate for the South Island is, as usual, higher than that for the North Island, but the difference this season is greater than normal, 96.93 being recorded for the South Island and 89.43 for the North Island, a difference of 7.50. The North Island percentage has fallen by 3.04 from 92.47 in 1947, but the percentage for the South Island has increased by 2.99 from 93.94.

Loans for Building Sow Accommodation ON the grounds that pig breeding, as distinct from pig fattening, is mainly the work of the small farmer in New Zealand, the Government has decided to make loan assistance available to farmers for the building of extra sow accommodation or the renewal of units which have become obsolete. It is hoped thereby to aid the production of pig meats by encouraging the small pig raiser to carry more breeding sows. Loans of up to £5O will be granted for each unit built or improved, with a limit of £lOO. Each loan will be subject to the approval of the secretary of the local branch of Federated Farmers and the supervisor of the local district pig council, by whom the plans must be approved and the work inspected. Loans will be made through one of two channels: Through the State Advances Corporation, if the farm is already indebted to the Corporation, which will take additional security if necessary and charge interest at its normal rate for such loans; in all other cases through the Bank of New Zealand by overdraft secured on the property, carrying interest at the normal overdraft rate and Government guaranteed if necessary. Regular repayments will be arranged by means of factor orders.
