[Douglas Elliott photo. Waratahs and other Australian members of the protea family are among the few flowering shrubs that will thrive in dry clay soils and windy places, provided they are not subjected to more than light frosts. The New South Wales waratah (Telopea speciosissima) is one of the best of this family for planting in a dry, sunny situation.
