Lambing Estimates For 1945

A NEW ZEALAND RECORD

Number Tailed Should Exceed 20 Million

Contributed by the LIVESTOCK DIVISION.

I ’HE highest Lambing percentage estimate ever re--1 corded in New Zealand92.64has been made for 1945.

While the percentage estimate for the South Island was, as usual, higher than for the North Island, the difference was only .19 per cent, (compared with a difference of 3.99 per cent, the previous season.

From the estimated number of lambs in the Dominion in 1945 measured by totals in other years, it is reasonable to assume that for the first time in the history of New Zealand farming the number of lambs tailed in any one year will have exceeded 20 million.

FINAL WOOL ESTIMATE ' An all-time record weight of 372 million pounds is revealed in the final estimate of wool production for the 1944-45 season in New Zealand. This total is 27 million pounds more than the previous record figure reached in the 1941-42 season, and 42 million pounds more than the 1943-44 total. Average seasonal production during the three immediate prewar years was 309 million pounds. SHEARING AND TAILING In the 1944-45 season more sheep and lambs were shorn and more lambs were tailed than ever before in New Zealand. The latest figures, with the figures for the immediate pre-war year, 1939, in parentheses, are as follows: Sheep shorn, 30,285,000 (29,042,000); lambs shorn, 5,245,000 (4,119,000); lambs tailed, 19,453,000 (17,230,000).
