The gumland soils occur in patches right through North Auckland. The areas consist of undulating treeless downs, rising occasionally into low hills. The soils are mature podzols, acid soils of low fertility formed under conditions of intense leaching. Drainage is bad, and rushes and manuka form the natural covering.
