P CARRYING THE WAR LOAD Railways' Big Responsibility Apart from their responsibility of meeting this, country’s domestic transportation needs, the railways are called upon to handle abnormal quantities of additional trafficservicemen, equipment and the output of accelerated industry— a load far greater than transportation in New Zealand has ever previously known. In face of these extra burdens, can there be any wonder that people are asked to travel only if their journey is really unavoidable; is it not reasonable that rail freighters should be required to avoid wasting the time of wagons which carry their goods?
