Reports on Club Activities

SOUTH OTAGO. Warepa.Club members met in Mr. L. Christie’s woolshed at Warepa; a butchering demonstration by Mr. W. Miller, of Kaihiku. Mr. Miller killed, skinned, and dressed three sheep, showing and explaining to members all points to be considered in turning out a pro-perly-dressed and finished carcass. Arrangements made for the next meeting. There was an attendance of thirteen out of a total membership of twenty. MANAWATU. Bunnythorpe.—Short discussion on the Potato competition. Lecture on "Grasses” by Mr. T. Richardson; this was followed with keen interest, and a lively discussion ensued. Eleven members in attendance out of a total, of fourteen. TE KUITI. Paewhenua.Club debate, the subject : being "That Country Life Has Greater Advantages Than Town Life.” Speakers: Affirmative, C. Dean (leader), K, Harnett, L. Harriett; negative, G. Morris (leader), W. Dean, C. E. Heena. It was decided to hold another debate at the next meeting, and teams were chosen from those 1 members who had not already taken part: ■

There were nine members present out of a total of seventeen. At the previous meeting arrangements were finalised for a tennis match with members of the Otorohanga Club; the meeting concluded with- impromptu speeches by members, the attendance being ten. . BAY OF PLENTY. Paengaroa.—Two members, C. Riddell and J. Gulliver, gave 'interesting talks on the judging of dairy cows, and gave their experiences of stock-judging competitions .in which they had taken part in outside districts. There were seventeen members present. At the previous meeting one new member was - enrolled, and final arrangements were made for the club's' annual dance. Lieut. Brown, Adjutant, Te Puke Home Guard, gave an interesting lecture on “Farm Finance and Mortgages,” and answered numerous questions put forward by members. ' At this meeting. there was an attendance of twenty-four. Tauranga.— to invite members from the local military camp to attend meetings and lectures,. A-visit to the dairy factory was arranged, Mr. Harvey,, manager of the Tauranga Dairy Factory, gave a lecture on "The Manufacture of Butter, and Factors Causing Poor Grades- of Cream.’-’ The ’-lecture-' was most in-

teresting and informative, and is to be followed up by two visits to the dairy factory, one whilst the machinery is idle, so that it may be explained in detail, and the other whilst it is in operation. At previously unreported meetings the following activities took place: Impromptu speeches by club members; delegates reported on the district committee meeting; social held for the purpose of teaching younger members to dance; lecture on “Orchard Diseases” by Mr. Nottage, Department of Agriculture; club’s fifth birthday party held. Four new members recently enrolled, bringing total membership up to twenty. News was received that Cpl. A. Voss, a member who left for the Middle East in 1940, has been decorated with the D.C.M. for bravery. i ! Note.—Club secretaries are urged to send in reports of their club meetings and field days as regularly as possible, so that publicity may be given to all club activities. Accounts of club doings are not only of value to those keenly interested in the organisation here in New Zealand, but are eagerly sought after by club members in the fighting forces, to whom news of- their old club’s activities is quite a refreshing tonic. They are “keeping the flag flying” overseas, and‘it is up to all members at home to “do their bit” in an endeavour. to keep the Y.F.C. movement alive —this .applies, particularly to club officials.
