Home-made Tractor Tender For Heavy Oil Fuel
A USEFUL heavy oil fuel tender has been designed by Mr. M. Spencer Bower, of Swannanoa, North Canterbury. The whole unit, lorry included, cost about 255. The pump, which is the essential part, was taken from an obsolete type of petrol pump, as were most of the other fittings, at a cost of 10s. The pump is capable of delivering half a gallon for each complete stroke, so that it is possible to measure accurately the amount of fuel pumped. For example, 88 complete strokes will empty a 44-gallon drum. The pipe fittings used are clearly visible in the illustration, and consist, in the main, of ljin components. The delivery pipe rises to a height of sft above the top of the pump, while the , suction pipe is sft 7in above the floor of the lorry. The flexible hose was obtained with
the pump, and is standard. Flexibility in the pipes is effected by means of unions, as shown in the photograph. Sturdy bracing is also provided. An interesting feature is found in the supports for the oil drum, which consist of angle iron. The support on the lower edge of the drum is used to prevent slip, and the other, which is mounted on an angular wood block, is 3in high and gives the drum the necessary tilt to ensure that the pump will suck up the maximum amount of oil. To prevent the drum from rolling into the pump and to facilitate the revolving of the drum into the correct position, there is a wood block situated approximately 12in out from the elbow at the bottom of the suction pipe. The owner intends to fit suitable filters in the pipe . lines at an early date.
