Omokoroa Club's Concert
THE Omokoroa (Bay of Plenty) Club recently staged a very successful concert in the Te Puna Memorial Hall in aid of club funds. The concert was the Omokoroa Club’s first effort of this nature; a very large crowd attended The first item was a song by the company, “The Beer Barrel Polka.” Five girls sang the verses, with the boys coming in with the barrel, etc.,
and joining in with the chorus. The feature of the evening was a play, “The Old Geyser,” which was excellently performed. The plot centred on a colonel with a sick sister and a broken geyser. On a Sunday morning it so happened that the doctor attending the sick woman, the plumber called in to fix the geyser, and a suitor who came to ask the colonel for. the hand of his daughter, were all named “Smith.” The colonel mixed up the “Smiths,” and his attempts to straighten out the, tangle caused much amusement. The part of the colonel was played by Mr. Freddie MacDonald, who received excellent support from the other members of the cast. The programme included the following items: —Mr. <Harry Allen, recitation, “It’s Grand” (encored); Miss R. Maude, vocal solos, “You’re as Pretty as a Picture” and “Someone to Care for Me”; tap dance. Elva Richards, May Steward, and Joyce.. Nicholas. “The Bunk House” was a very popular item;
a collection of cowboys and cowgirls were gathered round the camp-fire after the day’s work, all joking together and joining in the singing, several solos and choruses being sung. Following this, Mr. Latham, dressed as a negro, sang “Old Kentucky Home” and “Old Black Joe,” Mrs. L. Anderson, recitation “Lasca,” and “Especially Jim.” Comedy sketch by Mr. H. Allen and Mr. F. Dalgety, “Sambo and Sandy McPherson”; quartette, Misses R. Maude, D. Lauder, V. Plummer, and Mr. L. Anderson, “Little Dutch Kindergarten”; duet, Miss R. Maude and Mrs. L. Anderson, “Waltzing Matilda”; recitation, Miss L. Hynd; tap dance, Elva Richards and Joyce Nicholas. The players in “The Old Geyser” were:-—Mr. F. MacDonald (Colonel),
Miss J. Hynds (Dorothy), Mr. P. Kirk (Suitor), Mr. D. Lauder (Doctor), Mr. H. Lauder (Plumber). There was also a short play, “Sunny Sunday,” in which Miss R. Maude and Mrs. Lauder sang together “Sing a Song of Sunbeams.” The last item was “Now is the Hour” sung by the company, after which everyone joined in the National Anthem. Supper was served by the Young Farmers and helpers, after which the club president, Mr. F. Dalgety, thanked the audience for attending, the performers for their entertainment, and all who had in any way assisted to make the concert a success. The supper was followed by dancing.
Essay Competition M. S. Moore, winner of a one guinea prize in the Christmas Y.F.C. Essay Competition is requested to send his full postal address to the Organising Secretary. On receipt of this a cheque will be forwarded to him.
