Among the Clubs: Reports on Activities.

A T the request of a number of members the name AT the address of the club secretary is included and address of the club secretary is included -K in this section beside the name of each club. It is considered that this information will be of value, as it will encourage secretaries to correspond with one another on club matters, &c., and will also assist prospective members and others to make contact with clubs in the various districts. The names of the District Secretaries are also indicated. A number of clubs are at present in recess because of seasonal farming activities, and consequently their secretaries have no news to report. . This applies particularly to the South Island, where harvesting and other. operations make it necessary for clubs to close down during the summer months. The same applies, in a lesser degree, to clubs in the North Island, many of which close down for one to two months because of haymaking, shearing, &c. Western Southland. ( District Secretary: A. Nicholson, who recently returned from overseas, gave a very interesting talk on his travels, illustrated by moving films. During his address he dealt with the Smithfield Meat-market and the Armour headquarters in United States of America. Central Otago. - (District Secretary: G. G. Alexandra (Secretary : Peter Weaver, Earnscleugh, Alexandra).Debate with the Alexandra Junior Homemakers’ Club, the subject being “ Is Twenty-one too Young for a Girl to Marry ? ” Contending' that women were too young to marry at twenty-one, Miss Hardy and Miss Weaver led the Junior Home-makers Club, and W. Cummock'and E. Weaver advanced the opposite view for the Young Farmers’ Club. Unfortunately, the Alexandra Y.F.C. Chairman (L. Kinnaird),

who would have been one of the leaders, was taken to hospital the previous day suffering from appendicitis. The judge, Mr. G. G. Calder, Department of Agriculture, decided in favour of the Junior Home-makers Club, and in summing up gave some useful hints on debating. Mrs. W. Bodkin, who took the chair for the evening, also brought before the members some interesting points in the art of debating. ■ The Junior Home-makers’ Club members served a very enjoyable supper. Bull exhibited a series of moving pictures on a “Trip through Australia, The Year’s Work on a Canterbury Farm,’’, and “ Interesting Events in the Malvern County. ’ A field-day was held on the properties of Messrs. W. J. Jenkins (Sheffield) and W. W. Mulholland (Darfield). Demonstrations included the following : Half-bred sheep (Mr. L. Jenkins) ; Southdown sheep (Mr. W. J. Jenkins) ; farm machinery (Messrs. T. Stewart and R. Thomson). A very successfid barn dance was held by the club to raise funds to send a member (E. R. Stewart) to take part in the Y.F.C. shearing championships at Palmerston North. . An energetic committee, under the capable leadership of the Club Secretary, transformed Mr. C. O. Redfern’s grain-shed into a very serviceable dance floor. About ninety couples danced to music provided by the orchestra consisting of Messrs. A. Hart, W. Pettit, and S. Sherry. The M.C.s were E. P. Stewart, M. Hutton, B. C. Jarman, and I. Gillanders. During the evening an exhibition tap-dance was given by pupils of the Darfield Keep-fit Class. Novelty dances were won by Miss Irene Stewart and Mr. J. Cridge, Miss Thelma Cooper, and Mr. A. Levick, and Miss Betty Reid and Mr. B. C. Jarman. A savoury supper was served. The barn dance was also successful financially, showing a credit balance of £8 ss. 3d. Dunsandel (Secretary : A. T. Marshall, “ Greenbank,” Marton).Decided that the club should give a radio talk on 10th January entitled “ Culling the Ewe Flock.” . Debate arranged with the Hunterville Club, the subject to be “ That Farming To-day is more Difficult than it was Fifty Years Ago.” Lantern lecture by Mr. B. Tennent, of Massey College, on “ Faults of Wood.” A successful club dance was held during the month, a profit of £8 17s. being realized. Taihape (Secretary : S. V. Smith, Taoroa, Taihape). Leach, club delegate to the District Committee, outlined the proposals made at the District Committee meeting regarding the holding of a Y.F.C. camp at Wanganui. An interesting address on his recent trip to England was given by Mr. S. Timbs. The speaker described the type of sheep and cattle in the various counties of England and Scotland. He also dealt with the grades and grading of chilled beef, and the grades of beef and mutton in demand in different parts of England. At the previous meeting, Mr. C. Dickinson, manager of the Westmere Cheese-factory, spoke on “ Present-day and Older Methods of Cheese-manufacture.” South Taranaki. (District Secretary: J. E. Garnett (delegate) on the recent Wellington Council meeting held in Palmerston North. A social evening followed. At the previous meeting arrangements were made for demonstrations in preparation for stock-judging at the Hawera Show. This was followed by. an address by Mr. H. Decided to hold a club debate at the January meeting. Lecture by Mr. A. Leslie, veterinarian, on “ Parasites in Stock.” Numerous questions were asked at the conclusion of the address. A collection of different varieties of grasses exhibited, the ma jority of those present being successful in naming them successfully.

Toko (Secretary : L. J. Kilsby, Huiroa R.D., Stratford). —An interesting account of his experiences in Australia was given by W. Lister, a club member who has just returned from a visit to that country. A field-day was held on Mr. J. Weir’s farm, demonstrations on the judging of cows and pigs being given by Mr. H. J. Kaye and Mr. Sorensen, respectively. Urenui (Secretary : K. Phillips, Waitoitoi).— Selection of teams to take part in the stock-judging competitions at Stratford Show. Two field-days were held, one on Mr. W. J. Freeth’s property ; a judging competition was conducted, three cows being placed in order of merit by members, the competition resulting in D. Peek and V. Graham being equal for first place. The judge, Mr. E. Griffiths, gave a demonstration on the points of a show cow. The other field-day was held on the property of Mr. B. Jonas, an instructive demonstration on the bacon pig being given by Mr. A. Alexander, Tikorangi. Southern Hawke’s Bay. (District Secretary : J. W. Palmer, Department of Agriculture, Hastings.)
