TESTING OF PUREBRED DAIRY COWS.
CERTIFICATE-OF-RECORD LIST FOR THE HALF-YEAR
W. M. SINGLETON,
Director of the Dairy Division,
The appended lists contain the records of those cows which have received certificates during the half-year ended 30th June, 1922. The list is small, for the reason that few cows complete their test during the first six months of the year. ' Several very creditable performances are recorded. In the Jerseys the outstanding yields are those of the two mature animals, Sylvian Prim and Signal's Lioness. These are half-sisters. Sylvian Prim, who has a record of 747-06 lb. fat, was bred by Mr. John Hale, New Plymouth, and was tested by Mr. W. Pollock, of Stratford. Her sire is Soumise Tom, sire of seven C.O.R. daughters, including Lady Superior, with 680-33 lb. fat. Soumise Tom is by Soumise Majesty, sire of nine C.O.R. daughters. The dam of Sylvian Prim is Primrose XXVIII, who traces back to such well-known males as Monopoly, Garibaldi, and Peter, and on the female side through the Mulberry and Primrose strains. Signal's Lioness, with a butterfat credit of 726-38 lb., is by Soumise Tom from Signal Queen. Signal . Queen’s pedigree contains the name of St. Brelade (sire of Madam Mayflower, for several years the Dominion's Champion Jersey), Viper, and Sailor Boy. Students of the breed will recognize names which have had a lasting influence on it in New Zealand. In the Friesians Ellesmere Eileen . is deserving of mention. Commencing her test at the . age of 2 years 59 days, she produced in 365 days the fine credit of 651-11 lb. fat from 20,480-45 lb. milk. She was bred by Mr. T. H. Overton, Lakeside, Canterbury, and was tested by Mr. L. R. Stoddart, Willowby, Canterbury. She is by Mutual Mercedes Pietertje (a son of Mutual Pearl of Rock, with a C.O.R. for 903-44 lb. fat), who is sire of five C.O.R. daughters, including Friens Mercedes Aquila, who, commencing her season at the age of 1 yeai 295 days, produced 514-98 lb. fat. The sire of Mutual Mercedes Pietertje is Mutual Piebe of Rock, sire, of eight C.O.R. daughters, and Mutual Piebe of Rock is by Mutual Piebe de Koi, sire of nine. C.O.R. daughters, including Mutual Pearl of Rock. The dam of Ellesmere Eileen is Longbeach Butterfly, who is. by Kruger II, sire . of thirteen C.O.R. daughters. It will therefore be seen that this heifer-is the offspring of several generations of proven ancestry. An Ayrshire deserving of mention is Milkmaid of Springview (Mr. A. H. - Hansen, of Te Rehunga) who . has produced 510-34 lb. fat, commencing test at the age of 7 years 57 days. This cow was on test the preceding season, when , she produced 600-21 lb. fat from 12,826-2 lb. milk, which record makes her-,..the. premier Ayrshire cow of New Zealand.
