CERTIFICATE-OF-RECORD DAIRY COWS.

W. M. SINGLETON,

Assistant Director, Dairy Division.

The appended list shows the records of those cows and heifers which have completed their year’s production and freshened again subsequent to test since the last return was published in the Journal for July last. The list contains the name of many individuals that have placed a splendid production to their credit, but space will not permit special reference to each of these. ■ Attention, however, is directed to four new class leaders.

Flossie of Koputaroa now heads the list for mature Ayrshires. Her record is more creditable than the figures suggest. She commenced her test on the 14th July, 1915, and was milked on test 358 days, calving again on the 12th July, 1916, or within the year. ■

Meta, a junior four-year-old Friesian, was milked only 346 days, and dropped her subsequent calf some seven days under the twelve calendar months, but has nevertheless placed to her credit the leadership of her class.

The Jerseys have two new leaders in Lady Peggy and Mere. Both these animals were more fortunate than Flossie of Koputaroa and Meta, and had an opportunity to milk for the usual 365-day period. Lady Peggy becomes the leader of the senior two-year-old class. Her calving subsequent to the testing - period was thirteen months and four days after commencing her test.

Mere’s record was the subject of some comment in last month’s Journal, and although she commenced her test at the age of I year 346 days she is classified as a junior two-year-old. Her outstanding production of 663-64 lb. fat in 365 days, with twice-a-day milking and little supplementary feed, creates a very high standard for junior two-year-olds. Our testing officer, Mr. Boyd, has advised that Mr. Mcßae provided Mere with good pasturage during her milking - period, and that besides this she was fed during her year an aggregate of about i6| bushels of oats. Also 40 lb. of mangels per day were fed to her from Ist May to the finish of her testingperiod in September. Surely few records of this calibre have been produced at so low a cost for supplementary feed.

The cereals sown with tares for green feed at Weraroa last autumn did very well, and were fed to the dairy cows this spring. Barley and tares were the heaviest crop, but the rye-corn and tares, and wheat and tares, while very little behind the barley mixture in weight of fodder per acre, were of much better quality, and preferred by the cows. Oats and tares were the lightest crop, but made very nice feed. A large part of these crops, not being required for feeding out, is being made into ensilage.
