CERTIFICATE -OF - RECORD BULLS.

W. M. SINGLETON,

Assistant Director, Dairy Division.

A list of certificated bulls was given in the writers review of certificate-of-record testing operations published in the Journal for February last. Certain of these bulls and their C.O.R. daughters are commented on in the following notes :- . ~ .... ’ JERSEYS. , • . ■ f Golden Swan. The bull Golden Swan, bred by Mr. J. H. Smith-Barry in Wiltshire, England, was imported by Mr. A. Moreland, of Papatoetoe. Four of Golden Swan's daughters have certificates of record, and a number of others are now on test. Owing to an exceedingly dry season those milking during 1914-15 did -not do themselves justice, and the general average production of .this . bull’s daughters is . likely, to be considerably raised as the result of the. current season’s yield. . Of this bull’s daughters at Mr. Moreland’s, the highest credit went to Golden Swan’s Girl, which in 295 days produced 374-81 lb. fat as a two-year-old. Recognizing that this. young cow could

improve upon that performance Mr. Moreland continued her in test the following season. On this second season’s work she has been credited to the end of April, in 253 days, with 9,448-40 lb. milk, ■■containing 434-31 lb. butter-fat. Nor does the record of Golden Swan’s Lilac do her justice, although she is credited with 314-60 lb. fat, commencing her record under two years of age. She, in her second year’s test, is also doing better work. Another daughter doing her sire credit is Golden Swan’s. Lady. Her present certificate of record credits her with a . yield of 276-79 lb. fat in 281 days, commencing at less than two years of age. Her second season’s credit to the’end of April, for 304 days, is 8,744-30 lb. milk, containing 468-84 lb. butter-fat. • . At the time of writing the highest-record, daughter, of Golden Swan is Snow Bird, owned by Mr. C. A. Willis, of Pukekohe. This heifer commenced milking at the age of two years five days, and .produced 395-16 lb. fat. Although a very creditable performance, it also is likely to be superseded by this cow on her second season’s work. Doubtless, Golden Swan’s progeny will be held in even higher esteem as they attract attention to their powers of production. Good Luck. The C.O.R. daughters of Good Luck were all owned and tested by Mr. C. Stevens, of Maungatapere, North Auckland. Their productions were made under conditions not the most favourable for making the best records, and still the figures are creditable. Ava, in 363 days, as a three-year-old, produced 366-40 lb. butter-fat, and as a yearling Lucky Dorothy produced 311-99 lb. fat. In the two-year-old class Lady Hope HI produced 319-80 lb. fat; and Allie,, as a three-year-old, produced 327-65 lb. butter-fat in. 344 days. . Eminent’s Fontaine.— Owing to the late - arrival of a declaration one .of the daughters of Eminent’s Fontaine, finishing her record during 1915, was not included in the number credited to this bull in the February issue of the .Journal.. This bull’s credit should therefore read as six C.O.R. daughters having qualified during 1915, ■and ten C.O.R. daughters since the commencement of the testingsystem. . - ■ ■ • • FRIESIANS. ■ Longbeach Van Tromp. — The name ■of this ■ sire,- which was bred and owned by Mr. J. C. N. Grigg, of Longbeach, is as well

known amongst New Zealand Friesian breeders as that of any other bull of the breed. Despite the fact that his daughters were represented in a considerable number of herds, few have been tested for a record. He has five C.O.R. daughters, four of which have qualified at the Weraroa Experimental Farm, and one at Mr. C. Hopping's. The record of Longbeach Ideal is the most outstanding amongst Van Tromp’s daughters. This cow as a three-year-old produced 633-85 lb. butter-fat, and has been purchased by Mr. C. A. Hopping from his father. Lenore has the best record, of the four C.O.R. daughters at Weraroa. She was in milk 365 days, and has a record of 481-29 lb. butter-fat. Gretchen has the next-best record. She was in milk for the comparatively short milking-period of 314 days, and produced 426-81 lb. fat. Other C.O.R. daughters are Julia and Dominion Domino’s Pride, neither of which milked the full year, but produced 380-47 lb. and 372-80 lb. fat respectively. The Weraroa' productions were made under herd conditions, with' twice-per-day milking. ’" The . pedigrees . of Longbeach Ideal and Dominion Domino’s Pride are very . good examples of line breeding. In each case the transmissible factors' of a sire ■ named Thumper have been concentrated. Breeders will recognize in Thumper the sire of Domino HI, the latter a name well known . among the fanciers of black-and-whites. • Netherland King. — Nether'and King also was bred at Longbeach, and doubtless this bull received from his ancestors many hereditary factors similar to those received by Longbeach Van Tromp. Both of these bulls are, through various lines, rich in the blood of such progenitors- as Taureau (Imp.) and. Netherland Queen (Imp.), and have at least 50 per cent. of their breeding in common. Netherland King was purchased by Mr. John Donald, of Westmere, who used him as the head of his herd for some time. All the C.O.R. daughters of Netherland; King were tested. young, and' none were milked their full- 365 days, the . average milking - period being 310 days. ' The best record is held by White Rosette, with a credit of 423-75 lb. fat in .292 days, as a three-year-old. Netherland Pauline, as a three-year-old, in 322 days produced 380-41 lb. fat. Netherland King’s other two C.O.R. daughters are Netherland Pride, with a record for 308 days of 331-71 lb. fat, and Netherland Duchess HI, with a record of 319-84 lb. fat in 317 days. Each of these is in the three-year-old class.
