CANTERBURY.

Strong Riccarton Contingent Engaged at Auckland Racing Club’s Meeting —-Amythas Re-appears on Tracks — Interesting Gallops at Riccarton. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The Riccarton contingent for Auckland has taken its departure, and looks like playing its part, well at the Ellerslie convincing ground. It comprises Arrowsmith, Counter Attack, Going Up. Winter Wind, Miss Mimic, Winning Hit, Nightraider, Rossini, Vespucci, and Gloaming, the last-named of whom was picked up by R. J. Mason at Feilding. They are a formidable lot and it will come as a surprise if Gloaming, Vespucci, and Arrowsmith do not get some of the Auckland money. On his latest •track efforts Arrowsmith nv>st be hard to dispose of in anything he contestc at Ellerslie. Great as were his showings before winning the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap, they have been excelled in his last three gallops at Riccarton, and apart from his Railway Handicap chance he is sure to keep Gloaming at top all through the Islington Plate. Amythas has made his re-appear-

ance on the tracks, but so far is not being asked to do more than light tasks. On his trainer’s return from the southern meetings the champion will be hurried along, with the idea of autumn engagements. Warlike is galloping particularly well and can hardly fail to pick up a good race at the southern holiday meetings. There was some interesting galloping recorded at Riccarton on Thursday morning, under favourable track and weather conditions. Link Up went nicely through a six furlong spin and Tyne ran the last seven furlongs of a mile in lmin. 33 2-ssecs. finishing strongly. Cave Rock and Liskana were on terms at the end of five furlongs run in lmin 4 3-ssecs. The latter is improving with every gallop. Koesian dashed over five furlongs in lmin 3 2-ssecs. and was going Strongly at the finish. Strayshot left five furlongs behind in 1 min ssecs. while Foo Choo and Volkovo finished together at the end of five furlongs, the last four of which took 50 3-ssecs. Foo Chow should pick up a good stake at the holiday meetings in the south.

Riccarton at present is almost deserted, as most of the local trainers are away in various parts of the Dominion. E. Kingan left for Greymouth on Friday with Strayshot and Pussyfoot, both of whom are freely engaged at. the West Coast holiday fixtures. Strayshot can hardly fail to pick up a hurdle race, but Pussyfoot is too erratic to be trusted.

G. M. Aynsley got away for Dunedin on Monday with Algidus, Reproachful, Warlove, and Wartone. They are all in nice racing trim, and the last-named pair have been showing improved form in their track efforts.

F. D. Jones has a very useful team engaged at the Dunedin and Southland fixtures. Malaga’s recent track work has been distinctly promising for his chance of picking up a good race, probably at Wingatui. W. McDonald goes to Westland with a pair of moderates in Castellan and Fabisco. The former has improved a good deal of late, and may account for a race shortly. McDonald’s luck of late has not. been of the best, for Listening Post broke down. Some Kid is on the sick list, while Fiery Cross and Glendower are just getting over blistering. Clean Sweep is still on the easy list as the result of his recent accident. He will not be taken south, but in Warlike, Sans Souci, Onslaught and Sungleam, Trainer J. Pearson will have a useful team for the southern meetings. T. H. Gillett will have small teams racing at the West Coast and southern holiday meetings. Greekson is particularly well at present, and on his form at Methven will be unlucky not to pick up a race or two at the West Coast meetings.

Some interesting galloping was witnessed at Riccarton on Saturday morning. Warlike, assisted over the last five of seven furlongs by Comment, took lmin. 30sec., going well. Adopted and a chestnut companion sprinted three furlongs along the back. Malaga and Greekson, the latter getting several lengths the best of the start, assisted by Mandrake over the last portion, ran a mile in lmin. 44 2-ssec., the trio finishing on terms.

Humboldt, alone, skipped over five furlongs in lmin. 4sec., Jazz taking lmin. 3 l-ssec. for the same distance. Onslaught and Endure were together at the close of six furlongs, run in lmin. 17 l-ssec. Link Up, assisted by Barmaid, ran five furlongs in lmin. 3 3-ssec. Link Up went on for a further furlong. Wartone, alone, ran five furlongs in lmin. ssec. Sans Souci and Sungleam were companions over half a mile, the latter being slightly in front. Cave Rock and Negligence, assisted by Liskana over the last four furlongs, ran five furlongs in lmin. ssec Liskana finished three lengths in front.

Warlove, with a fair weight up, assisted by Algidus over the last mile, ran a mile and a quarter in 2min. 12sec. Tyne, alone, ran a mile and a-quarter in 2min. 16sec., the last nine furlongs taking 2miri. 2 2-ssec. Volkovo and Foo Chow were together all the way in leaving six furlongs behind in lmin. 17 2-ssec. Bomb and Gossard ran the last four of five furlongs in 53sec.
