DANNEVIRKE RACING CLUB.
SUMMER MEETING.
IDLE TALK WINS THE HANDICAP
(From Our Travelling Correspondent.)
DANNEVIRKE, Wednesday
The one day summer fixture of the Dannevirke Racing Club took place today in fine but dull and cold weather. A big crowd of sporting enthusiasts rolled up from all parts of the country to witness the afternoon’s racing. The sport, taken right through, was decidedly interesting, and the fact of four first favourites winning during the afternoon sent backers home on good terms with themselves. Mr. R .H. Skipwith’s starting could have been improved upon, for several of the send-offs were decidedly patchy. Mr. R. H. Aidworth gave his decisions from the judge’s box in his best style, his placings meeting with every satisfaction.
• The totalisator staff handled £31,533 during the day, compared with £28j323 at last year’s meeting, when a two days’ gathering was held. Pacific Slope was voted- the best of goods for the Glengarry Hack Hurdles, and the Wellington-owned hurdler won in good style from Tori’! ea and Crosswords, who were second " and third respectively, with
General Raven, who hails from Gisborne, close up, fourth. During the lunning of the race Trentham Rose came down, and Lady Witchet, Sweet Tipperary and Buckeye fell over her, while Tipperary Lass also fell. Luckily the riders concerned all escaped with nothing more serious than a severe shaking. The' stipendiary stewards were not satisfied with O’Rane’e running, but after taking evidence from the owner, trainer and rider they accepted the respective explanations as satisfactory. Absurdity, owned by Mr. C. Crosse, a steward of the club, touched a short price in the Maiden Plate, but the filly was not equal to pulling her backers through, and finished well behind the placed division. The winner turned up in Wamba, who scored nicely from Blissfulness, with Melting Moments close up, third, and Prudent Lad fourth.
Asterin a, with H. Gray in the saddle,. was the “elect” of backers for the Otanga Handicap, and once again the brown mare won nicely at the business end. Dunedin was second and Handy third, with Paonui the next to finish.
Several smart two-year-olds were seen out in the Juvenile Stakes, the winner turning up in Taipairu, who was bracketed on the machine with Warpath, while Creme de Menthe was next, with Anomaly third and Edendale fourth. The four horses named all gave a fine display, and they can be depended upon to fare well during the holidays. Prince Ferouz looked well, but was chopped out at the start, which spoilt any chance he had of winning. Gasbag carried nearly £2OOO on his prospects in the Dannevirke Handi-
cap, but the brown colt was not equal to giving Idle Talk 271 b., and the latter won easily at the finish from the favourite, who was seen putting in some good work when the winning line was crossed. Railand, who is shortly due for a win, was close up, third, and Walton, who ran well, was fourth. Idle Talk is trained by her owner, Miss Grace Barrett, of Feilding, and the crowd gave the winner a cheer when she returned to weigh in. Automoana, who was due for a win, scored decisively in the Tamaki Hack Handicap, the mare’s supporters receiving a good return for their investments. Valley Rose was close up second, with American Beauty and Yankee Dan third and fourth respectively.
Black Lace, who carried four figures, was the public’s choice in the Oringi Welter Handicap, and with H. Gray in the saddle the All Black mare won comfortably from Sycorax, who defeated Missmaid by a narrow margin for second place. Honey Bee, who is running with ill-luck, finished fourth.
The curtain was rung down on the meeting by the decision of the Ruahine Welter Hack Handicap, for which Pente, who was just headed off for winning honours at Woodville the previous week, was made an odds-on favourite. After allowing Mumble and Festivity to act as pacemakers
to well within the straight, R. Reed brought Pente along to win easily from Festivity, who defeated Maniahera by a narrow margin, with Mumble close up, fourth. The results were:—
