HOROWHENUA RACING CLUB.

ANNUAX MEETING. ESPERANCE .WINS THE CUP. (From Our Travelling Correspondent.) PLIMMERTON, Wednesday. One of the most successful meetings ever held by the Horowhenua, Racing Club took place when their annual fixture was Conducted at Weraroa. The . weather was very inclement overnight, while heavy rain this morning deterred quite a number of,.sporting enthusiasts from putting in an appearance. Nevertheless, the attendance was very large, visitors being present from the adjoining districts and further afield. The racing provided was really first class, heads only separating the placed horses in several of the events.

The Cup went to Esperance (Martian —Mary of Agryle), by Mr. J. Fuller, of Seddon (Marlborough), who, however, . was not present' to see his horse win. At the conclusion of the race, Esperance’s trainer (C. Pritchard) was called into the stewards’ room, where the tQstst .of the • owner was given by the.club’s president (Mr. Jas. McLeavey);who' in a few- well-chosen words said that one and all were pleased to see the cup won by a popular sportsman. • The victory was a deserved one, for Mr, Fuller had for many years'bb’On ; a 'gdriefpus supporter of racing without experiencing a great deal of success. By the way, the dividend returned by Esperance was the largest • paid out during the day. The race for the McDonald Memorial Handicap (six furlongs) was the best ever seen on the course, the placed horses, Nursing ' Sister,’ Gold Problem, and Beloved,' . flashing across the winning line together,' heads only separating the trio. ' ‘ ? O’Rane, - who did not get away any too well in the Hurdles, put in a phenomenal run ovdr the dast bit, and beat Pawerewere, who 'appealed unlucky not to win, by the narrowest of margins oh the post. O’Rane can be regarded as a very promising hurdler. Two minor; incidents occurred during the day. Prior to starting in the Cup, Ladify’s bridle fell off, and the mare completed four circuits' of the course before she pulled up. As she had run three miles, her withdrawal from the race naturally, followed. While the mare was galloping strongly in the straight a bystander endeavoured to stop her, with the- result that he was knocked over, but as far as could be ascertained!'., he, escaped serious injury. During " the ’ running of 1 the Maiden Scurry, Jackaroo, when holding a good position just before entering the straight, crossed his legs, and came down, the - mishap causing trouble to several other horses following just behind.

The starting of Mr. Angus Keith was particularly good, while Mr. J. Cameron made an admirable judge, and though he had several close finishes to decide, his placings met with every satisfaction. Mr. Walter Bull, the club’s .popular and genial secretary, had all the details at his .finger ends, and the gathering will long be remembered as the most successful one-day fixture in the history of the club. The totalisator staff; which was in charge of Mr. W. G. Talbot, of Wellington, handled £22,399, compared with £14,860 for the corresponding meeting last year, an increase of £7539.
