OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. FIRST DAYMOLYNEAUX WINS TEONE MAKITONORE STAKES. (From Our Travelling- Correspondent.) PLIMMERTON, Monday. Fine weather and a big crowd of sporting enthusiasts made the opening day’s spring meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club, which took place to-day, a huge success. The attendance was a record, the special trains put on by the Railway Department from Palmerston North and Wellington being filled to overflowing. Money was very plentiful, £39,547 finding its way through the totalisator, compared with £14,075 for the first day of the corresponding fixture last year. The various events were productive of some spirited contests, the finishes in several of the racing being very close, constituting a tribute to the excellent work of the handicapper (Mr. H. Coyle), who had summed up the prospects of the horses in no uncertain manner. Molyneaux, ridden by R. Hunt, won the Teone Makitonore Memorial Stakes in fine style, the win being a popular one, for the horse’s owner-trainer (Mr. J. M. Cameron, of Hastings, is one of Hawke’s Bay’s most prominent sporting identities. The minor events resulted in some fine finishes, and the gathering will long be remembered as' a very successful one. Mr. O. J. D’Ath, the club’s popular secretary, who was assisted by Mr. J. Griffiths, of Wellington, who, by the way, is thoroughly conversant with racing methods, did all in their power to assist those who had business to attend to in the secretarial department. As usual, the club’s genial president (Mr. Ben Ding) was on hand to extend the courtesies of the club to its many patrons, while lady visitors were, as usual, surfeited with sweets by Mr. Ding, who has for years past made it a practice to distribute confectionery amongst the fair sex, who always appreciate his efforts in this direction. Mr. R. H. Skipwith was in good form at the barrier, the send-offs being very even, while the native judge (Mr. Horo Karauti) was, with two exceptions, correct in his placings from the box. The instances referred to were in regard to Bonnie Briar, who appeared to be second in the Stewards’ Hack Handicap, and who, however, was not placed at all, and Stutter, who unquestionably secured second place in the Stewards’ Hack Handicap and was placed third. DAINTY STEP WINS PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. PDIMMERTON, Tuesday.

The gathering was brought to a conclusion to-day in fine weather, the attendance for an off day being highly satisfactory, while the racing- was again very interesting, the finishes in several of the events being in doubt right up to the moment the winning line was crossed. Dainty Step, trained’ by J. Ayres, at Trentham, who was considered unlucky on the opening day, won the President’s Handicap in fine style from Molyneaux and Royal Exchange, all three horses flashingi across the line with the narrowest of margins separating them. During the afternoon the stipendiary steward (Mr. C. Tringham, of Wellington) called the judicial committee together to consider the running of Rouen in the Otaki Hack Handicap compared with the gelding’s display in the Dominion Handicap on the opening day. After taking evidence from those immediately concerned, no action was considered necessary. The totalisator staff, under the management of Mr. W. G. Talbot, of Wellington, put through £27,781 for the afternoon, making a total for the two days of £67,328, against £28,254 that was handled on the corresponding day in 1919, the increase in favour of this year’s fixture reaching the big sum of £39,074. The results were:— TRIAD HANDICAP of lOOsovs. Five furlongs. 4—A.' Gray’s b m Automoana, 4yrs, by Autumnus —Tangimoana, 8.5 (R. Reed) .•. 1 2 —J. Bain’s blk f Spare Moment, 3yrs, 8.0 (A.
