WAIRARAPA.

R. Knox to Race Penury Rose and Sir Wai at Marton—Mill o’ Gowrie and Rekanui to Run in Flat Event at Marton Fixture —Latest Addition to H. Jensen’s Team —Snub Doing Well in His Work —W. Hawthorne Has Over 20 Horses in Commission —Wairarapa Stables Well Represented at Marton. MASTERTON, Saturday. Mr. W. E. Bidwill, the Featherston sportsman, who a few years ago was one of the principal owners in the Dominion, has practically nothing to carry his colours at present, although several youngsters are being handled on his property. One of the biggest two-year-olds at present in training in the Wairarapa is the Waimangu—Sensation mare youngster jn W. H. Corlett’s stable at Clareville. Wainui is the- name bestowed on him, and Mr. F. Bacon, of Masterton. is the owner. R. Knox is taking Penury Rose and Sir Wai to the Marton meeting. The latter is still a maiden, although ho has been in a place on several occasions. The veteran trainer bred Sir Wai. and won races with both sire and dam. A promising two-year-old is the b g by Prudent King—Lady Limasol, who is owned by Mr. A. McDonald and is a member of J. T. Jamieson’s team. The gelding has a very free style of galloping, and is well grown. Mill o’ Gowrie and Rekanui are to be started in flat events at Marton, but the pair will be seen out again over hurdles during the spring and summer meetings. Just when the tracks at Opaki were getting firm again heavy rain fell, and local trainers have had to content themselves with giving their charges road and hill work.

The latest, addition to H. Jensen’s team at Clareville is a filly by Feramorz —Elfreda. which, although not asked to gallop yet, shows a lot of quality. J. T. Jamieson left Masterton on Thursday with half a dozen horses, which are to compete at the early meetings. The team will probably be divided, some going to Avondale and others to Wanganui. The horses are all in nice condition, and it should not be long before they are at their best. Affectation is looking much better since being operated upon, and Rose Wreath is much benefited by her winter’s spell. The Martian —Lady Disdain gelding Snub is fast coming back to racing condition, and has been going along well in his work at Opaki. Snub is to be kept to flat racing, and will contest the longer weight-for-age events during the season. Last year the gelding won some good races, including the Auckland Plate, Governor’s Plate. King’s Plate and Sandringham Handicap. The last three races were run at Flemington. W. Hawthorne informed me during the week that he was taking twelve horses with him to Wanganui instead of the half dozen mentioned last week. They have now arrived at Wanganui and are likely to be away from home some time, as the Opaki mentor is of opinion that there will be better facilities for training operations while away. On looking over the horses last week, the writer found them in excellent condition, although it will need a race or two to put the finishing touches on most of them. Mr. Kemball intends entering upon the present season with the same confidence he has displayed in the past, and has over twenty horses at present in commission. There are no two-year-olds included among the team, but the three-year-olds promise to turn out a good lot.

Wairarapa stables are likely to be well represented at the Marton meeting, and the following horses have been engaged:—Master Boris, Affectation, O’Rane. Rose Wreath, Mill o’ Gowrie, Penury Rose, Gladful, Tenterfield, Sir Wai, Rekanui, Raceful, Rieuse and Rebuff. Owing to the continued wet weather in this district during the past month, most of the horses in training are backward in condition, and may not show to such advantage as later on in the ■season. Mill o’ Gowrie and Rekanui are to be given a run on the flat to sharpen them up in view of the jumping events at Wanganui. Tenterfield, runner-up in the last Australian Cup, is engaged in the Electric Hack Handicap, but may not be a starter as he recently hurt his stifle while exercising at Opaki. All the horses engaged from this district are making their first appearance for the present season.
