GISBORNE RACING CLUB.

STEEPLECHASE MEETING. DEAD-HEAT IN WINTER OATS. The Gisborne Racing Club opened their steeplechase meeting on the Park Racecourse. Te Hapara, on Thursday in fine weather, the attendance being a large one. Despite the fact of the fields being reduced in size in consequence of the inability of the visiting contingent of horses to patronise the fixture through failure to secure passages by steamer some excellent racing was provided, the track being in good order. Naturally a decrease in the totalisator investments was to be expected, the sum handled during the afternoon amounting to £11,873 as against £16.997 last year, which is £5124 less than for the corresponding day in 1919. The secretary (Mr. H. E. Dodd) had all arrangements in smooth working order, nothing being neglected in providing the maximum of comfort and enjoyment to natrons. A start was made at 11.30 with the running of the Park Hurdles Handicap, in which a quintette faced the starter, Mr. R. H. Skipwith. Hoki Fox led. to the first hurdle, when Crosswords took charge, and passing the stand the latter showed the way to Cymer, Hoki Fox, Rotata, and Wairirk At the hurdle near, the seven furlongs post Cymer was on terms with Crosswords, while Wairiri and Rotata. both refused at the obstacle in question. Cymer and Crosswords continued to dispute supremacy up till the final hurdle, but once over Cymer outpaced his rival, and won comfortably by a couple of lengths, Hoki Fox being a dozen lengths away third. The good field of 13 lined up at the barrier for the Maiden Hack Race, and from an even despatch Waikohu and Over There were quickest to find their feet. the latter leading into the straight from Anata. with Waikohu at the head of the others. A splendid finish saw Over There prevail by half a length from Anata, with. Waikohu a similar distance away third. Queens Up was fourth. The winner is a three-year-old gelding by Gazeley^—Pauleen, and therefore a full brother to Gazictue. and is owned by Mr. C. J. Bennett. Over ' There, who was solidly supported, was ridden a confident race by R. Reed. The Flying Handicap attracted five starters, Lionskin, Actifid. Orawia, Shaki, and Lord Ainslie. Actifid was smartest out of the barrier, and made the running from Orawia, this pair fighting out a great finish, in which

the latter prevailed by a head, Shaki being, close up third, and Lionskin fourth. The latter’s showing was made the subject of an inquiry, and after consideration, his rider (C. Poulgrain) was disqualified for two years. Brunswick and Fagot were the only starters in the Gisborne Steeplechase Handicap, and the former shot to the front from the start, and never allowed his opponent to get on terms with him, winning easily at the finish. Nine started in the Hack Flat Handicap, Prince Randall and Persian King being the early pilots, but at the approach to the straight entrance Tieki took command, but Glengyle was up with the latter at the turn foi’ home. The pair engaged in a desperate finish, Glengyle gaining the judge’s verdict by a head. Prince Randall was half a length away third, and Persian King fourth. Juan, Gay Boy, and Con were the only starters in the Tramway Hack Steeplechase, in which the first-named registered an easy victory by half a dozen lengths from Gay Boy, Con being 100 yards away at the finish. There were five starters in the concluding event, the Winter Oats (one mile and a-quarter), which was productive of a stirring finish. The veteran Patetonga made the pace a cracker over the first half of the journey, with Orateur, Dribble, Cleft, and Acquittal following- in the order named. Orateur was in front rounding the bend, with Cleft most handy of the others. An exciting set-to between Orateur and Cleft saw. the pair flash past the post together, the judge (Mr. W. G. Sherratt) declaring a dead-heat. Dribble was a couple of lengths away third. The results' were:— PARK HURDLES HANDICAP of 250 sovs. Two miles. W. The fields in most cases were small,

only two coming out for the Te Hapara Steeplechase, though the Hack Steeplechase attracted five starters. The totalisator staff handled £14,002, as against £19,352 last year, making a total for the meeting of £25,875, as compared with £36,349 for the 1919 winter gathering, a decrease of £10,474.
