TURF GOSSIP.
Lord Nagar, Luke and Income, winners on the second day of the Egmont meeting, were winners on the second day at Wanganui.
Mr. G. L. Stead’s horses -and the balance of his stud which did not change ownership when the Brackenfield stud went under the hammer, will be transferred to the North Island in the course of a week or so. This will mean that the well-known Yaldhurst training stables and tracks, where R. J. Mason formerly trained so many notable winners for the late Mr. G. G. Stead, will be for a time at least minus a tenant.
Prior to competing at the Egmont R.C.’s winter meeting, Marqueteuf had only one victory to his credit this season, having won the Stratford Cup on New Year’s Day. The son of King Mark, however, had registered a number of placed performances, and in his successes in the two principal handicaps at the Egmont meeting he was heavily backed, the fact of H. Gray being in the saddle being largely responsible for the rust which set in on his number on the machine. Marqueteur followed up his double success at Hawera by winning the Connolly Handicap, the principal flat event on the opening day of the Wanganui meeting, and returning his supporters a good dividend, the fact of him being rehandicapped for the race in question causing many to pass him by when making their final selections.
