WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB. WINTER MEETING-. BAD WEATHER FOR FIRST DAY. BIG STEEPLECHASE WON BY FIRST LINE. LOCHELLA SCORES TN CENTURY HURDLES. (Fi cm Our Wanganui Correspondent.) meet ’ n “ of the Wanganui Jockey Club opened on Thursday, when the climatic conditions were anything but favourable. A very strong wefi Iy wind was. blowing with a threatening sky, and it was bitterly cold Fortunatdy the rain held off for the raem o , though the heavy showers of the previous night had made it very damp n^ de^o^’^ and going was soft, but m %° bad < a « might have been expected. _ The attendance was not very lar°-e which was not surprising in the circumstances, but those who patronised the meeting had the pleasure of witnessing some fine racing, which was got through with the smoothness invariably associated with Wanganui meetings. Secretary W. Hall had all the arrangements in perfect order, and he and his staff are to be congratulated on the way m which they carried out their duties. Mr. R. B. Lusk, the judge, had. some, very close finishes to decide, but he proved equal to the task hoisting the. numbers promptly and accurately. Mr. R. H. Skipworth, the starter, did fairly good work, though in two or three of the races the despatches were not as even as might have , ® e ß' ' le fine rac -ing was a. tribute very capable handicapping which M;. Bert Coyle was responsible for and he had every reason to be well pleased with the results of his work. The Garrison Band rendered a very fine programme, which did much to enliven the proceedings. The totalisator investments for the opening day showed a slight falling off compared with the first day last May, when the sum was £39,829, as against £3<,(77 put through on Thursday. In view, however, of . the fact that the attendance was materially affected by the bad weather, the shrinkage is not surprising. The . ten acceptors in the Borough Handicap, with which the ball was set rolling, all lined up. Kinsem was looking particularly well, and she was sent out a better favourite than Bo Peep. The latter .was slow to begin, but Income dwelt even more. Kinsem, Jutland and Egmont Park were in the U’? nt antil tbe bend was reached. Here Miss Gold took charge and was first into the straight, where Egmont Park and Ruddy challenged, a splendid finish resulting in a win for Miss Gold by a .neck from Egmont Park, Ruddy only a head away, and then came Kinsem, There were nine starters in the Hack Steeplechase, . Luke being the most fancied, but there was solid support for First Call and Ngakanui. In the early stages of the race, First Call y® nt along well, jumping in good style but Sir Donald then took charge the Aucklander fading out of it. Sir ’Donald led into the straight and over the last obstacle, where he swerved, and this gave Ngakanui a chance to get up to the son of Advance as they reached the post, a dead heat being. recorded. Luke jumped like the' accomplished fencer he is, and finished third, after making up a lot of ground over the last two furlongs. Silent Dick was fourth. Nefische struck the second fence of the double, half a mile from home, and dipped badly, losing his rider. This gelding. might pick up a race at the Auckland meeting as he is a remarkabty fine jumper. Master Strowan and Gang Awa’ were unable to reach Wanganui for the meeting owing to the seamen’s attitude in declaring racehorses “black,” and they were non-starters in the big •steeplechase, for which Old Mungindi and Yankee Jack were also scratched, leaving seven to go to the post. It was a good betting race, Maraetotara, Gladful, and Wirokino each carrying over £lOOO. The winner turned up in First Line, the son of Advance giving a fine display of jumping, and proving much too good for the opposition. He was nicely handled by J. R. Kaan, and never looked like being beaten over the last mile or so. Wirokino jumped well, but hari not the pace of the winner. Gladful was going along well at the finish, and may be heard of shortly. Manhattan is not ready yet, but the big Maniapoto gelding shaped well, and he promises to win a big cross-coun-try race before long. Polthogue was handy until half a mile from home, when he toppled over. Lochella and Applaud were withdrawn from the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles in order to contest the Century, while Student had dropped down dead the previous day after a round over the hurdles. This left nine to contest the event, Toa Tere being entrusted with most money, Negambo being next in demand. The favourite was never very prominent, but Master Boris made a big effort to win. leading over the last three-quarters of a mile into the straight. Here Paddington Green came with a fast run, and just got the verdict, paying a good price. Want and Luperino declined their engagements in the Century Hurdles, the last-named having been taken back to Auckland on Tuesday. Omahu looked as if a race or two would do him good, but his party were very confident, and the black son of Maniapoto was made a warm favourite. Lochella and Goldstream each carried over £lOOO, and Zola, and Lord Nagar were also heavily backed. It was a fine race,

Zeus being in front, jumping well, most of the way, but Lochella, was always handy, and he headed Zeus at the tui n into ‘the straight, where Omahu also came on the scene. Lochella took the last jump well, and went on to wm comfortably after giving an attractive display of. jumping. Omahu was some distance back, second, and then came Goldstream a long way back, with Kauri King next. Zeus came a cropper at the last hurdle, and Lord Nagar fell over him. The latter was going well at the time, but had no chance of catching Lochella.. . Lochella incurs a 51b. penalty in the Great Northern Hurdles as a result of his win in the Century, but even with 9.13 he will take a power of beating. The local gelding, Zola, did not run up to expectations, but he was unlucky, as he was nearly blinded with mud at the first hurdle. Nine saddled up for the Connolly Handicap, and this was another good betting race, Rude finishing up a firm first choice, though there was very solid backing for Punka and Maioha. It was a fine race, and the favourite looked like winning when he ran to the front in the straight, but H. Gray brought Marqueteur with a fast run on the outside, and got up just in time to win by the narrowest of margins. Punka was a good third, and Depredation fourth. . There were fifteen starters in the Purua Hack, for which Tame Fox, despite the fact that he had top weight (9.8), was the popular pick, Rebuff and Crucelle being the most fancied of the others. Penona and Misslove were left at the post. Flight Commander led down the back and round to the bend, but Tame Fox then took charge, and went on to win nicely from Missland and Passin’ Through. Mimire was close up fourth, and this gelding ought to get among the winners shortly. The results were: — BOROUGH HANDICAP of 400SOVS. Six furlongs. 8— W. R. LORD NAGAR THE HURDLES. It is doubtful if racing was ever conducted in 'Wanganui under worse climatic conditions than those which prevailed on Saturday for the second day of the winter meeting. Throughout Friday night the weather was verystormy, and heavy showers fell at intervals in the morning until after 11 o’clock. The rain then held off for an hour or so, and when the first race was run there appeared a prospect of the weather remaining fine, but before the next event • down came the ram again, and it continued for the greatei part of the afternoon, blinding showers drenching the riders, who were also bespattered with mud. Notwithstanding the unfavourable conditions, some good racing was witnessed, and the jumping was very fine, no falls being recorded. Features of the afternoon s sport were the splendid jumping or Luke and First Line in the Grandstand Steeplechase, and the splendid performance put up by Tame Fox in the Ba'gownie Hack. The wretched weather kept many people away, and the attendance was a. very small one for a Wanganui meeting. In the circumstances, it is not surprising that the

investments on the totalisator showed a decrease on the second day’s total last year, the figures being £44,177 in 1919, as compared with £41,653 on Saturday. The total for the meeting just concluded was £79,430, as against £83,936 last May, a decrease of £4500. There were eight starters in the Winter Oats, with which event Saturday’s programme opened, 80-Peep being the popular pick, though Ruddy, Kinsem, and Vasilkov were well and very evenly backed. It was a capital race, Income scoring by a narrow margin from Kinsem, which led to the distance. The winner got a very bad start on the first day, but began better on Saturday. He is a three-year-old gelding owned by Mr. F. Seiwood, and got by Guianforte —Pommery. He was ridden by S. Anderson, a young apprentice, who is only sy z stone, but who promises to make a fine rider. The public made Missland favourite for the Balgownie Hack, but Tame Fox, despite the fact that he had the big load of 10.4 to carry, was very solidlysupported. The favourite had every chance to win, as she led into the straight, where Rebuff took charge, and looked all over a winner, as Tame Fox had been shut in when making a run at the bend. However, M. McCarten brought the Volpone gelding with a fast run on the outside, and just got up in time to snatch victory from the Martian gelding. It was a popular win, horse, owner (Mr. W. Duncan), and rider .being cheered on the gelding returning to the paddock. There were only seven starters in

the Grandstand Steeplechase, but it was a splendid race, the field (with the exception of Khartoum) being bunched most of the way, and all clearing the obstacles in excellent style. It was a good betting race, First Line finding most favour, but there was very solid backing for Maraetotara, and Wirokino. Six furlongs from home they were in a heap except Khartoum, and he was some distance back, but going down the back stretch Luke drew out, and though First Line went after him, Luke ■had no trouble in winning. The Acrostic gelding is a very safe jumper, and his double win at Hawera and his performance on Saturday stamp him as a good one. Old Mungindi was going along well at the finish, and may do better next time of asking. There were nine starters in the Rata Hack. Hurdles, Master Boris carrying most money, Paddington Green and 'Cello being very evenly backed in that order. Gold Soult refused to leave the mark when the barrier went up and took no part in the race. As he aid the same thing on the first day, a total of over £l3OO was chucked away, on him by backers. The favourite made a big effort to win, but Paddington Green proved too good, winning in fine style, after being badly left. Paddington Green was ridden by W. Bowden each day, and as he also rode Luke, he thus had three winning mounts over the obstacles, the same as he had at Hawera. . There was some spirited backing in the May Hurdles, being a firm favourite, though Lord Nagar and Yankee Jack were each heavily supported. It was a fine contest, Lord Nagar scoring after a splendid finish with Yankee Jack, the two named beingwell ahead of the others. Lord Nagar led over the last hurdle, when Yankee Jack momentarily headed him, but Mr. Kemball’s gelding was not to be denied, and tackled Yankee Jack again, getting the verdict after an exciting battle.

Depredation was withdrawn from the Empire Handicap, leaving nine to go to the post, Rude carried over £5OO more than Marqueteur, while Punka was the most fancied of the others. Missgold made the pace in the early stages, and then Maioha and Punka carried on the running. Punka and Detroit were together entering the straight, and the former drawing out appeared likely to win until M. McCarten brought Rude with a rush on the outside, and won a fine race cleverly from the Cooltrim mare, with' Detroit third, and then came Maioha. The Farewell Hack was contested by a field of 12, Sir Fanciful, Crucelle, and Passin’ Through being those most in demand. Prior to the start, Gay Ladybolted a couple of rounds. Crucelle and Marble Bar were out in front at the start, but at the bend Timidity Passin’ Through, Some Fashion, and Misslove were close together in front. A good race to the post resulted in Passin’ ' Through stalling off Some Fashion’s challenge and winning by a narrow margin.

The most successful riders at the meeting were: W. Bowden and M. McCarten, with three wins ea.ch. Others who had winning mounts were: G. Carmont, J. Kaan, F. Feilding, H. Gray, S Anderson, J. Preston, and C. Reed, while A. Ward and A. Lawrence deadheated in one event.

The list of winning owners was headed by Mr. W. R. Kemball with £775. Mr. W. Duncan secured £660, Messrs. Mclver and Wright £640. The

following also won over £100: Messrs. Acton- Adams £4OO, J. Gravestock £o9<», AV. G. Emeny £320, F. Seiwood £290. R. E. Laurent £175, J. Bull £145, and J.’ K. Jackson £125.
