HAWKE’S BAY TROTTING CLUB.
INAUGURAL MEETING. The weather was all that could be desired for the inaugural meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club, which was held on the Hastings racecourse in the presence of a large attendance. Notwithstanding the fact of it being a non-totalisator gathering, the proceeding were of a most successful character, and gave pointed evidence of the club’s undeniable claim to a totalisator permit in the future. The growth of trotting has been of so marked a nature of recent years that it seems almost incredible that Hawke’s Bay, a province which has turned out many successful light harness candidates, has not as yet been granted a totalisator permit for a trotting fixture, and the newly-formed Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club cannot fail to receive due recognition from the trotting authorities at the forthcoming conference in Wellington, when the question of further totalisator permits for the 1920-21 season will constitute one of the most important subjects under consideration. The support accorded the initial meeting of the club by North Island owners was particularly gratifying to the officials, and the success of the gathering was largely due to the indefatigable efforts of the secretary, Mr. P. G. Dickson, who had all arrangements in smooth working order, being ably assisted by the stewards of the club. The District Handicap, for which eight candidates were saddled up, was won by Kingsland, who, getting to the front soon after the start, maintained his lead throughout, scoring comfortably from Chocolate Soldier, who finished well, with Lady Hal in third position. Lady Morland accounted for the quintette which opposed her in the Stewards’ Handicap in tradesmanlike style. In the early stages, Captain Rothschild and Roe Bell threatened danger, but they both left their feet, Lady Morland being taken to the front, where she remained, eventually winning by eight lengths from Captain Rothschild, with Roe Bell ten lengths away third. Seven horses harnessed up for the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Cup, and a splendid race ensued. Lobster acted as pilot until approaching the straight the last time, where the Manawatu Cup winner, Master Hal, and Bluewood both put in their claims, an exciting finish resulting between the latter pair, Master Hal securing the judge's verdict by half a length, with Bluewood three lengths away third. Lady Morland made her second appearance during- the afternoon in the Royal Handicap, a saddle event, in which five faced the starter. Ridden by her trainer, A. E. Adams, Lady Morland scored decisively by a dozen lengths from Yimkin, who just managed to defeat Waiteranui by a head for second honours. Seven started in the Hastings Handicap, which provided a sterling finish between Welcome South and Kingsland, the former, who was driven by the veteran reinsman, W. C. Hird, prevailing by a head amid much excitement. Sherry was four lengths away third. Half a dozen were harnessed up for the President’s Handicap, and going along the back the field was in a bunch, giving prospects of a close finish. Racing to the straight entrance, however, Ena Bell put in a fine run, which enabled her to secure a commanding lead, and she had no difficulty in winning by three lengths from Waiteranui, with William the First half a length away third.
