MANAWATU TROTTING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. MASTER HAL WINS THE GOLD CUP. The Manawatu Trotting Club were favoured with fine weather for their annual meeting, which took place on the Awapuni racecourse on Friday. The attendance constituted a record, while the large fields engaged made the racing particularly interesting, some excellent finishes being witnessed. In the circumstances, it was not surprising that a record totalisator turnover resulted, the sum of 21,423 being handled, as against £10,334 last year, when the meeting was held at Christmas? time. Mr. H. Davy, of Christchurch, stipendiary steward, was present, but there was nothing of a serious nature to claim his attention. Mr. A. Keith gave complete satisfaction as starter, while the secretary (Mr. A. H. Manson) got through his many duties in his usual capable manner. There were 11 starters in the Trial Handicap, Herd Laddie being installed ’ favourite, but he never had a chance with Pillage and Mindful, who soon established a commanding lead, and had the race to themselves, Pillage winning handily by a couple of lengths, the favourite being a poor third, and Rosina Elect fourth. Herd Laddie, who, in his previous race, had had the services of R. Dunn, was harnessed up again for the Stewards’ Handicap, and probably the fact of his owner (J. Bryce) taking the reins caused him to go out 'favourite, Plain Rose and Rothschild Excelsior also being - solidly supported. The lastnamed took the lead early, and was never headed, winning very comfortably by a dozen lengths from the lit-tle-fancied Alphie K., with Brandon four lengths away third, and Roe Bell fourth. The large field of I'7 was saddled up for the Linton Handicap, Malmsbury being made a warm favourite, A. Pringle being in the saddle. The favourite and Miss Murphy established a lead stron after the start, the former takingcharge going along the back the last time, Miss Murphy dropping back. From this out, the favourite never gave his opponents • a- • chance, passing the winning line 100 yards in advance of Brachycombe, who returned a substantial second dividend, Pearl Dillon, the rank outsider of the field, being a couple of lengths away third. Ten horses came out to contest the Manawatu Trotting- Gold Cup, Master Hal being most in demand with backers, though Rothcliff, William the First and Fisherton were all solidly supported. Taikorea was the early leader, and he maintained his position until a

couple of furlongs from home, where Master Hal put in his claim, while Saints Bell also joined in the struggle over t-he- final stage, but had no chance with the favourite, who prevailed, by a couple of -lengths, Taikorea being eight lengths away- third.- . . A warm favourite in Nelson Derby fulfilled expectations in the North Island Amateur ■ Ladies’ Bracelet, in which event he led all the way, and won very , easily by several lengths from Plain Rose, with Rosina Elect in third position. Waiteranui, with J. Bryce, Junr., in the saddle, was the elect of backers in the Awapuni Handicap, and, ridden a well-judged race, he always had the measure of his rivals, crediting his owner (Mr. J. H. Lloyd), who won the Cup with Master' Hal, with a popular victory, the Auckland representative, Winestra, being three lengths away, second, and Van Coronado a similar distance away third. Another favourite —the fifth in succession—in Ballin accounted for the Palmerston' North Handicap after an exciting finish with Roe Bell, who suffered defeat by a neck only, Wild Lad being a dozen lengths away third. Ena Bell was the popular choice for, the President's Handicap, but she failed to show up prominently, the issue being stubbornly contested by Rothcliff and Taikorea,’ the former winning by a head after a. sterling race. William the First,- who was the rank outsider, was a couple of leifgths away third. The results were: — TRIAL HANDICAP (Harness) of 100 sovs. One mile and a-half. 2— Mrs. L. K.
