RACING REVIEWED

MANAWATU RACING CLUB. AUTUMN- MEETING. FIRST DAY. DAINTY STEP AVINS PRINCE OF WADES HANDICAP. SIRES’ PRODUCE STAKES WON BY DITTDE RIVER. AMYTHAS THE GODD CUP. (From Our Travelling- Correspondent.) PADMERSTON, Wednesday. Dull and showery weather was experienced for the first day of the Manawatu Racing- Club’s autumn meeting-, which took place on the Awapuni racecourse to-day. The rain of the previous days had made the enclosures very sloppy, while the going was very soft, with the result that the times recorded in the several events were somewhat on the slow side. To make matters more pleasant underfoot a quantity of straw was scattered about on the lawns, which was appreciated, for the rain had turned the enclosures into a veritable quagmire. The approaches to the totalisator' were in a very bad condition, a quantity of water in the runs making matters rery unpleasant underfoot. The attendance was very satisfactory, visitors being present from all parts . of the country, while the collection of motor cars probably constituted a record for the . club. The racing taken right through was thoroughly interesting, and so well had Handicapper Mr. J. E. Henrys concealed the winners that not one single favourite scored during the afternoon in the handicap events, the only machine favourite to get.home being Amythas in the weight-for-age event, the . Awapuni Gold Cup.’ The result is naturally a feather in the cap ■ of .the . veteran weight adjuster. Mr. Angus Keith- was in excellentform at the barrier, the. starts, being . a treat to witness, while Mr. J. R. L. Stanford, from his vantage post in the judge’s box, gave his. decisions .with his usual promptitude and accuracy, the verdicts meeting with popular approval from all concerned. • The meeting was admirably managed by Secretary Mr. J'. M. Johnston, who was aided by a willing band of’ assistants. The "totalisator staff under -Mr. W.G. Talbot, of Wellington, had all »the details in this important department under thorough control, and the dividends were announced very quickly aftei’ the place'd horses, had been hoisted. During' the afternoon 1 £41,699 was handled, against £36,0.9.5. for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £5604. THE RACING. Proceedings commenced with the running of the ’ Apprentices’ Plate for which Island, the gelding by Finland— All's Well, who was started in preference to his stable-mate, Sandy Macdonald, was made a warm favourite in a field of seven two-year-olds, while Sea Foam was also- well fancied. Gay Patron delayed the start for some time through his rider (A. Hare) being dislodged from the saddle, the horse bolting. He was subsequently caught, however, and a good start was effected. Island was soon out in front and es- ■ sayed to win from end to end. Sea Foam came through entering the straight, and galloping in great style, won easily by two lengths from the favourite, with Castellan a length away third, and Gay Patron, who was unlucky, close up fourth. Wishful, Gang Awa’, All Talk, Ngakanui, Toa Tere and Paddington Green were taken out of the Karere Hurdles, leaving eight starters. Yankee Jack was the public fancy, while Sail Home was also solidly supported. From the send-off Sweet Tipperary and Hautawa went to the front, and passing the stands on the first round this pair was leading from Yankee Jack. Sweet -Tipperary led around the back, and to straight entrance, where the black mare was joined by Zola, who, clearing the last obstacle in fine style, caught Sweet Tipperary a few hundred yards from the post, and, going on resolutely, won easily by two lengths, with Yankee Jack a similar distance away third. Hautawa was fourth, and Sail Home fifth. The bracketed pair, Bonnetter and Trespass, were in keen demand with backers for the Prince of Wales Handicap, and when the machine closed the Kemball pair were easily at the head of the betting quotations, with Daytime and Marqueteur next best supported. The race requires very little description, for as soon as the tapes were released R. D. Morris rushed Dainty Step to the front, and the black mare piloted the field out of the straight, attended by Daytime and Haversack. Dainty Step was still in front as they ran' down the back stretch, and she led into the straight from Daytime, Haversack, and Bonnetter. In the race up the straight Bonnetter got on terms with Dainty Step, but the latter, well served by her lightweight, managed to shake off her opponent, but had to be hard ridden to withstand a determined challenge from the fast-finishing Marqueteur, whom she defeated by a head. Bonnetter, who failed under pressure, was three lengths away third. Detroit was fourth. ■Humbug was backed for the Twelfth Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, in which there were seven starters, as if the event was a foregone conclusion, but a surprise awaited backers, Little River winning easily at the finish. Rieuse and Blackmail were the first to show out, and led to well inside the distance, where Raceful appeared to possess a winning chance, while Demand was in a handy position, with Little River coming fast. The latter

caught the leaders opposite the stands, and went on to win nicely by half a length from Demand, with Insurrection two- lengths away third. Raceful was fourth. ‘ The good field of 15 lined up for the Linton Hack Welter Handicap, which was voted a good thing for Rebuff, . the Kemball galloper being a firm favourite when the machine closed, while Simon and Farce counted heavy support. The last-named and Rebuff were prominent up to the straight entrance, where the field closed up, Rebuff and Sweet Song being first to turn for home. Valencia, who put in a wellsustained run, got up in time to defeat Sweet Song by a head, Whizz Bang being a couple of lengths away third, and Molyneaux fourth. When racing towards the straight entrance, SelfAlliance fell, breaking a leg, while Guianform also came down as a result of the mishap. Out of ’5572 invested on the totalisator on the Awapuni Gold Cup, for which a quintette were saddled up, Amythas carried over half the pool, Arrowsmith being the only other contestant whose chances were seriously considered. The figures proved to be a true criterion of the prospects of the Foxton-owned throe-year-old, for at no part of the race did the champion give his backers any anxiety, and though Arrowsmith was responsible for a good finishing run, the favourite never appeared to be in serious danger of defeat. Missgold was the early leader, but she was soon displaced by Vagabond and Arrowsmith, but Amythas headed the latter pair going along the back, and maintained his lead to the finish. Arrowsmith made a gallant effort to catch the gelding in the straight, but Mr. F. S. Easton’s representative had a clear length’s advantage from the English-bred horse when the winning line was crossed, Vagabond being ten lengths away third, and Missgold fourth. Hearty cheers. greeted both horse and rider (A. J. McFlinn) on their return to the enclosure, while Arrowsmith was also cheered for the stubborn fight he had put up.

No less than 22 horses contested the Woodhey Hack Handicap, for which Parorangi was made favourite, while there was lots of support forthcoming for Heather Sprig, Crucelle, and Sir Fanciful. Yankee Dan was the first to become .prominent from a splendid start, with Passin’ Through and Asterina as his nearest attendants. Parorangi was in front at the entrance to the straight, where the field commenced to close up. Over the last bit Crucelle came very fast, and, galloping in great style, got up in time to win on the post by a neck from Parorangi, with Princess Marion two lengths away third, and Utuwai a head away fourth. The afternoon’s sport was. brought to a conclusion by the decision of the Telegraph Handicap, which was voted a “can’t lose order” for Mustard Pot, while 80-Peep was a close second favourite. Silver Link hopped .off smartly, and, galloping very kindly in the mud, led right up to within a few hundred yards from the winning post, when she was passed by 80-Peep and Mustard Pot, and in a ding-dong finish the former won by a- neck, with Silver Link two lengths away third. Chimera was fourth. Acre was badly left at the post, finishing last. The results were: — APPRENTICES’ PLATE of 150sovs. Seven furlongs. oC C. Time, lmin. 19sec. SECOND DAY. MANAWATU STAKES WON Bi' SILVER LINK. NOBLEMAN WINS' LONGBURN' HANDICAP. PALMERSTON, Thursday. Beautiful weather favoured the Manawatu Racing Club for the concluding day’s racing, which was brou'ght off this afternoon. The overcast conditions of the previous day were replaced by a warm sun, proving a boon to racego-

ers, and, naturally, racing was carried on under splendid climatic conditions. There was again a very, large attendance .of racing enthusiasts, while the sport provided some surprises. The chief topic of .interest was the defeat of Amythas by Silver Link in the Manawatu Stakes by a. narrow margin after an exciting contest. The Cloverlea Nursery Handicap . provided a boil over, the little-fancied Rouen, a two-year-old by Bezonian from. Lady Laddo, who only carried £B4 oh her prospects on the totalisator, defeating two wellbacked candidates in Little ETver and Rieuse, each of whom carried over £2OOO against their names on the machine. Rouen’s supporters received a dividend approaching half a century. Nobleman put in a great run over the last portion of the Longburn Handicap, and got up in time to win by a neck. The success of the Sir Laddo gelding was very popularly received. The minor events provided a maximum of excitement, and the two-day fixture will long be remembered as a very enjoyable one. The starting of Mr. Angus Keith was again first-class, while Mr. J. R. L. Stanford’s decisions met . with every satisfaction. The totalisator staff was again kept very busy, £42,228 finding its way through the machine, compared with £38,144 for the corresponding . day. last year, making a total for the two days of £83,927, against £74,239 that was handled at last year’s autumn meeting, an increase of £9688. NOTES ON THE RACING. All of the eight acceptors started for the Kairanga Hurdles, which set the ball going. Sweet Tipperary and Sail Home were selected as the pair most likely to give a good account of themselves, and they finished up first and second favourites respectively. The former acted as pacemaker throughout, and was always in front until the straight was reached, where A. McDonald brought Omahu along with a welltimed run, and in an exciting race up the straight Mr. J. Bull’s hurdler got the verdict by a neck from Sail Home, who, coming fast over the last few hundred yards, defeated Sweet Tipperary by a similar margin. All Talk was fourth. When going well, Better Luck was galloped on, and had one of his tendons severely cut. Dainty Step, oh the strength of her meritorious performance on the first day, was accorded big support for the Stonyhurst Welter Handicap, and once again the black mare proved herself capable of pulling her supporters through. Parorangi and Kilgour were responsible for the pace set. but once in the final pinch Dainty Step came away to win a fine race by half a neck, a length separating Parorangi and Kilgour. Goldshine, who appears to have trained off, was close up fourth. Simon was backed solidly for the Ava Hack Welter Handicap, while Whizz Bang was second choice with backers. Mumble and Farce were first out from an excellent start, ■ and this pair carried on the running to the home turn, where the field closed up, and several horses put in their claims. Sea Foam, who had run prominently the previous day, got her head in front half-way up the straight, and, nicely handled by G. Corkhill, the chestnut mare won an exciting race by a head from Whizz Bang, who was unlucky in the early stages, with Rebuff a neck away third, and Guianform fourth. A great surprise awaited the public in the Manawatu Stakes, for which the champion three-year-old, Amythas, was considered unbeatable. In a totalisator pool of ■ close on £4OOO, Amythas was entrusted with over £2500. The next best backed was Silver Link, who carried about a sixth of the coin invested on the Demosthenes gelding. There was very little delay at the starting post, all the field getting away smartly with the exception of Amythas, who, for once, was slow in getting into his stride. The two-year-old Chrysostom was rushed to the front, and acted as pacemaker in company with Hymestra and Silver Link until the home stretch was entered upon, where McFlinn called on Silver Link for a final effort, with Amythas putting in some strong work. These two horses singled themselves out for a tussle for supremacy, end both responded gamely. At one time it appeared as if Amythas. would defeat Silver Link, but ‘amidst intense excitement Mr. Alexander’s mare flashed past the post with a neck advantage from Amythas, with Parisian Diamond a length away third, and Chrysostom fourth. Both the first and second horses received a” great ovation on returning to weigh in, the cheering lasting for several minutes. Silver Link’s performance was certainly meritorious, while Amythas put up a brilliant finish. The latter appeared to falter coming into the straight, and this may have cost him the race. The time recorded (lmin. 17 3-ssec.) is accounted for by the fact of the course being holding after the recent wet weather.

The Cloverlea Nursery Handicap provided a severe facer for backers owing to the little-fancied Rouen winning rather comfortably and returning her supporters a substantial dividend. Several of the horses put up overweights, which ranged in the case of Festivity, was was burdened with an additional 31b., to Strategy, who carried 181 b. more than she was entitled to. The field was close together coming up the straight, where McCormack brought Rouen along with a well-timed run, the Bezonian gelding lasting long enough to win by a. clear length from Little River, with Rieuse a half length away third. Kikini was fourth. Rouen ran a very creditable race, and he should be heard of again in the near future. Marqueteur was strongly supported on the machine for the Longburn Handicap. but the chestnut had to strike his colours to Nobleman, who scored a popular win at the finish. Demos was the first to show out from a capital start, with Marqueteur and Punka as his nearest attendants. The former was first into the straight. where Punka ranged alongside, and this pair were, fighting out a great finish when Nobleman came with a bulldog run, and. cutting the leaders down in fine stvle, he ran past the winning post with a neck to snare from Marqueteur, with Punka a bare half neck away third, and Bonnetter. who failed to show her usual brilliancy, close up fourth.

There was still another surprise for devotees of the totalisator when the little-fancied Utuwai strolled home in the Addistone Hack Handicap and re ; warded his supporters with the second largest dividend of the meeting. Irapuka began smartest, and led to the turn, where the field were bunched, while Vasilkov, the favourite, who was fractious at the post, was well in the rear. Coming into the straight both Utuwai and Passin’ Through were well placed, while Empyrean could be seen threading his way through. Utuwai was not to be denied, however, and, galloping in resolute fashion, won by a short neck from Empyrean, with Passin’ Through a similar distance away third. The next to finish was Misslove, who was seen putting in some capital work in the final pinch. The curtain was rung down on the meeting by the decision of the Borough Handicap, which was voted a foregone conclusion for Mustard Pot. Out of about 30 horses handicapped for this event, only four made the final payment, and at the last moment Parorangi was withdrawn, leaving only three runners. Mustard Pot proved that the excellent opinion held by trainers as to the weight allotted was fully borne out, for the chestnut won hard held by a neck from Missgold, Birkenvale, the only other runner, being a length away third. Mustard Pot proved that he is a real good sort, and should win again in his turn. Riding honours were very evenly distributed. L. Morris, G. Corkhill and A. J. McFlinn each rode a brace of winners, while others to . win on _ ote occasion were: H. Gray, R. D. Morris, FT. Goldfinch, J. Barry, E. Copestake. A. McDonald. A. McCormack, A. Reed, G. Carmont. and A. Ellis. The results were: KAIRANGA HURDLES of 200sovs. One mile and a-half. 5—J. Bull’s blk g Omahu, syrs, by Maniapoto—Gold Cord, 11.9 (A. McDonald) 1 2 —A.
