RANGITIKEI RACING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. FIRST DAY.

CUP WON

BY

HYTTUS.

(From Our Travelling Correspondent.) BULLS, Wednesday. The weather was fine though a strong wind was in evidence to-day for the first day of the Rangitikei Racing Club’s annual meeting, which took place on the Bulls racecourse. Since the previous gathering, several notable improvements have been carried out at the club’s course. These include the enlarging of the saddling paddock, and additions to the totalisator house, which has been shifted from its original position to a more convenient site, and is now a very commodious structure, while the expansion of the enclosure should suit the requirements of the club for many years to come. The attendance was very satisfactory, visitors coming from all parts of the Dominion, while the adjacent country side was well represented. Some excellent racing was witnessed, and, taken all through, the opening day’s events provided a maximum of enjoyment to patrons. The Cup resulted in a boil over, the little-fancied Hyttus, who, by the way, returned a double-figure dividend in a five-horse race, began smartest when the field was sent away, and, keeping in front throughout, won on the bit without being bustled. Nobleman and Lovematch both tried to catch Hyttus, but their efforts were unavailing, and they finished second and third respectively, while Moui toa Ivanova, who was thought susceptible of winning, was fourth. The pretensions of the other competitor, Amberine, were never seriously considered by backers. The field was a decidedly poor one for a £5OO stake. The minor events were keenly contested, and the fact of four first favourites being successful enabled backers to come out fairly well in their encounters with the Mr. J. McMahon, chief stipendary steward, was in attendance, but he had nothing of importance to engage his attention, everything appertaining to the racing being above suspicion.

Mr. Angus Keith was in excellent form at the barrier, the various sendoffs being marked by their evenness, and in this respect Mr. Keith gained the confidence of everyone concerned for his capital work. Mr. J. Cameron made an admirable judge, his placings meeting with every satisfaction. The meeting was capably managed by Mr. H. A. Goodall, and he is to be congratulated upon the efficient manner in which he discharged his various duties. The totalisator staff was kept very busy, and at the close of the day it was ascertained that £28,847 had found its way through the machine, compared with £25,866 for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £2981. THE RACING. Proceedings commenced with the running of the Scott Memorial Handicap, from which Nursing Sister was the only withdrawal. Bindle was a strong favourite, while there was plenty of support forthcoming for Astinome, who had won at Masterton the previous week. At the start, Affectation showed out momentarily, and carried on the running for a couple of furlongs, with Bindle and Astinome handy. The latter was in front at the distance, where Bindle could be seen coming fast. The latter was in front a few hundred yards from the post, and looked all over a winner, but Gray allowed his mount to come out from the rails a trifle too far, and K. Tucker, on Egmont Park, took advantage of the opening, and, dashing his mount tip in the nick of time, he secured the verdict by three-parts of a length from Bindle, with Astinome a similar distance away third. The winner, who had acted as runner-up at Ounpake on the 17th inst., returned the largest dividend of the afternoon.

Empyrean, who hails from the same stable as the previous winner (Egmont Park), was made a staunch favourite for the Trial Plate, which was contested by the big field of 21. The old saying, “the bigger the field the greater the certainty,” was fully borne out by Empyrean prevailing very comfortably by a length from Sea Foam, who looked a winner inside the distance. Whetoki was two lengths further back third, with Prodigal another length away fourth.

All started in the Ohakea Hack Hurdles, for which Endure was in

marked request with backers, and at

the close of betting on the event, Mr. Wiri Tokena’s galloper finished up a good favourite. All the horses displayed jumping proficiency. Sweet Tipperary and Ngakonui were companions in the lead for a mile and a-quarter, when L. Lambess took Endure to the front, and from this out the race was a procession, the Fordell representative winning easily by a length and a-half from Ngakonui, with Khartoum two lengths away third, and Signorella fourth. Hepta and Nursing Sister were backed for the Carnarvon Hack Race as if the event was a foregone conclusion, while a quiet tip from the right quarter was Tempo, owned by Mr. Wiri Tokena, which sportsman’s colours had been carried to victory in the previous race. Tempo was always well placed throughout the race, and, coming away inside the distance, won comfortably by half a length from Hepta, with the littlefancied Paonui, who runs in the same ownership as Hyttus, close up third, March On was fourth.

Marqueteur, Rose Wreath, Demos, and Combustion were taken out of the Cup, for which event Lovematch, Nobleman, Moutoa Ivanova and Hyttus were backed in the order named. The race requires very little description, for at the send-off Hyttus and Amberine went to the front and showed the way out of the straight and around the back, where Hyttus could be seen jogging along comfortably. The six-year-old son of Hymettus took a decided lead five furlongs from home, and, cantering along in front without being really extended, ran home an easy winner on the bit by a length and a-half from Lovematch, with Nobleman another half a length away third, Moutoa Ivanova being fourth. Risingham, fresh from his recent Masterton success, carrying the steadier of 10.4, was made a good favourite in the Pukenui Welter Hack Handicap, while Farce also came in for liberal support. . Kapiti was the first to show out, and led the field to the turn, where the black filly was done with. Shortly after entering the straight Risingham, who was nicely handled by A. J. McFlinn, took the lead, and going on well won easily by three lengths from Simon, with Catalini a similar distance away third, Quiniro being fourth. Old Gold, who appears to be the people’s idol and usually is installed favourite in any races he contests, was made a firm first choice for the Parewanui Welter, and once again the gelding let his supporters down badly, the best he could do being to run third. Gold Problem and Zola were well placed in the early stages, the latter taking the lead coming into the straight, where he appeared to be a sure winner, when Pretty Bobby, coming from behind, cut Zola down in .great style, and, going on nicely, won, by half a length, with Old Gold a similar distance away third, Railand being fourth. By the way, Mr. Good, the owner of Pretty Bobby, informed the writer after the race that he was leaving for England shortly, and that Pretty Bobby was for sale.

The first day’s racing was brought to a conclusion by the decision of the Ngatiapa Hack Handicap, for which Santorini, who has some excellent races to his credit, was a firm favourite, while Irapuka was also thought capable of securing the stake. Irapuka and Flying Master were both well placed entering the straight, where Santorini could be discerned coming fast. The latter caught the leaders a hundred yards from the post, and won cleverly by half a length from Valley Rose, who headed Flying Master in the last few strides, Hori being close up fourth. This race was voted the best of the day, there being a very small margin between the first four horses as they flashed past the post. The results were:—

SECOND DAY.

FRASER MEMORIAL WON BY MOUTOA IVANOVA. BULLS, Thursday. Splendid weather was experienced for the concluding day of the Rangitikei Racing Club’s annual meeting, which took place this afternoon in the presence of a big crowd of sporting enthusiasts. The racing was again very interesting, and some capital contests were fought out. The principal event, the Fraser Memorial Stakes, was won from end to end by Moutoa Ivanova, who showed marked improvement on her performance of the previous day. The minor events provided no end of excitement, and in several instances the issue was in doubt up to the moment the winning line was crossed, and naturally the club’s handicapper (Mr. J. E. Henrys) came in for considerable praise for his excellent handiwork.

The totalisator staff handled £29,432, compared with £24,621 on the second day last year, making a total for the two days of £58,279, compared with £50,489 that was dealth with at the corresponding meeting in 1919. This represents an increase of £7790 for the two days. All arrangements in connection with the meeting were carried out in a highly satisfactory manner, the energetic secretary (Mr. H. A. Goodall) sparing no effort to ensure the success of the two days’ attractive programme.

Racing was resumed with the Greatford Handicap, for which all the half dozen acceptors started. Astinome was installed an odds-on favourite, and from an excellent start her colours became prominent, and the Maniapoto mare led right up to within a few yards from the post, when she was caught by Ruddy, who won by half a length, with Gold Problem another length and a-half away third. Egmont Park was fourth.

Empyrean, Catalini, Big Push and Whetoki were withdrawn from the Rangitoto Hack Handicap, and in a good betting race Parorangi was made favourite, while Nursing Sister was next in demand. Following the send-off the colours of Nursing Sister and Paonui became prominent, while the field was bunched at the turn, where Nursing Sister joined Paonui, and in a slashing finish Nursing Sister won by half a length from Parorangi, who was a similar distance in front of Paonui, with Tempo close up fourth. The judge made a mistake in hoisting the numbers in this event, it being apparent to those who had a good view of the finish that Paonui was second and Tempo third, while Parorangi, who was placed second, finished sixth. The chief stipendiary steward (Mr. J. McMahon) drew Mr. Cameron’s attention to the error he had made, but the Tulings were not altered. As a protest against the judge’s placings, Mr. L. McKenzie, owner of Paonui, withdrew his horses from their other engagements.

All started but Chummy in the Sandon Hack Hurdles, for which Sweet Tipperary was a hot favourite.

Diamond Nap and Gratitude began smartest, and showed the. way over the first two hurdles. Going around the back Sweet Tipperary went to the front, but she faded out at the turn, where Khartoum could be seen coming fast, and, jumping the last obstacle in grand style he ran home an easy winner by a length from Ngakonui, who was three lengths in front of Signorella, with Warstar close up fourth. After being weighed out and investments taken on the totalisator, Yankee Jack and Hautawa were withdrawn from the Maiden Hack Handicap owing to the two horses named having won over the amount stipulated in the conditions of the race. Investors on the pair had their money returned from the totalisator. In the early stages Simon was always in a good position, just behind Big Push, who was hitting out well. Entering the straight Simon took the lead, and running along very generously won nicely by a length from Misslove, who was half a length in front of Catalini, with Whizz Bang and Big Push fourth and fifth respectively. All of the acceptors but Hyttus were saddled up for the Fraser Memorial Handicap, for which Affectation, who did not shape any too well in his preliminary, was a pronounced favourite. Moutoa Ivanova and Affectation began smartest, and showed the way out of the straight. The Foxton horse then took the lead, and kept in front for the rest of the journey, eventually winning by half a length from Lovematch, with Old Gold a similar "distance away third, and Zola fourth. The favourite was last.

Simon was the only withdrawal from the Pukehou Hack Welter, leaving a field of six runners, of which Risingham, who was burdened with 11.3, carried more money on the machine than Self-Alliance and Empyrean. At the start Empyrean, Vigolo and Persian Prince were in the van, and this trio led out of the straight and down the back stretch, where Empyrean took first position. The field was fairly well bunched at the turn. Half-way up the straight Risingham put in his claim, and, going on in great style, won by half a length from Empyrean, with Self Alliancg a further length away third, and Utuwai fourth. The winner’s performance received due recognition from the crowd, who cheered the gelding on his return to the enclosure to weigh in. Moutoa Ivanova and Old Gold, both of whom had run earlier in the day, were withdrawn from the Raumai Welter, which left six contestants. All Over, who it was anticipated would be improved by his race on the previous day, was installed a very warm favourite, while Tirana carried a lot off money. Tirana was first out, and led to the turn, where he was challenged by All Over and Railand. The trio engaged in a great battle - for supremacy up the straight, and when the winning post was reached necks only separated them, victory going to All Over, with Railand second and Tirana third. Gold Problem was a close fourth, with the others beaten off. The meeting was brought to a close with the running of the Farewell Hack Scurry, which attracted 11 runners. Quiniro, with H. Gray in the saddle, was a pronounced favourite. The start saw Flying Master quickly take up the role of pacemaker, and the Waverley-trained sprinter kept in front throughout, but had to be shaken up to win by half a length from the fast-finishing Ruddy, with Quiniro half a length away third. Sea Foam was fourth. This event provided a fitting wind up to a very successful meeting.
