EGMONT RACING CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING. A RECORD SUCCESS. TAIAMAI EFFECTS SURPRISE. (From Our Wanganui Correspondent.) The 1920 Cup gathering of the Egmont Racing Club took place on Wednesday and Thursday, the weather on each day being beautiful, and the attendance a record. The racing throughout was of a decidedly interesting description, the fields being good and the races generally very close. The fact that the winners were well concealed was a tribute to handicapper H. Coyle. The course and its appointments were in splendid order, and Mr. Alf. Morse, the club’s custodian, came in for many compliments from vising owners and trainers upon the state of the turf. The improvements recently made to the track, particularly the banking of the outside along the top bend, have made the going much better, some owners and trainers, in fact, stated that there is nothing better in- Australasia.

Another important matter upon which the club is deserving of congratulations was the excellence of the arrangements. In this connection special praise is due to Mr. V. B. Stratton, the very capable secretary, who was assisted by a very efficient set of officials. Mr. C. O’Connor got his fields away promptly, and invariably well in line, except in the case of one or two which dwelt on the mark. ‘Mr. T. Cameron, in the judge’s box, hoisted his decision promptly and accurately. The totalisator staff had a very busy time, the investments for the first day totalling £42,001, as compared with £32,978 10s. for the first day of last year. On the second day £47,369 was handled, making a total for the meeting of £89,346, against £65,504 10s. for the last year. In order to avoid congestion at the totalisator the club had this year cut out the 10s. totalisator, but this is only a temporary expedient, as when the new totalisator —part of the comprehensive scheme of improvements—is erected, provision will be made for the small investor.

Racing opened on the first day with the Hurdles, for which six went to the post, Explorer (looking well after his racing at New Plymouth) was made a better favourite than Movement, with Master Moutoa next in demand. Movement essayed to win all the way, but Master Moutoa drew up at the turn for home, w’here Movement made a faulty jump, and the Sarto gelding went on to win comfortably from Ngakanui, Movement and Endure following in order. Endure looked as if he was in the humour for galloping, but his rider handled him as if nervous of his jumping. Had he been allowed to go at his obstacles he might have been closer up.

The Flying was a good betting race, but at the finish the coin was forthcoming for Sasanof (H. Gray) to such an extent that he wound up a firm favourite. Inah made the pace warm, and was in the straight first, when Sasanof came with a great run from the ruck, and won handsomely. Lord Kenilworth, the second favourite, was never very prominent, and was last to finish.

Parorangi was entrusted with most money in the Mere Mere Hack, for which 15 started. There was solid support also for Flying Master and Nursing Sister. Glonday was badly left, the others getting off well in line, the first to break which were Prince Formby, Nursing Sister and Marble Bar. Flying Master went to the front at the bend, but in a splendid race to the post Marble Bar proved too good, getting the verdict by a very narrow margin from Flying Master, the favourite, which finished very fast, third, and then came Lady Paula. Eleven horses saddled up for the principal event of the day, the Egmont Cup, and it is safe to say it was the best field from a quality point of view which has ever contested a. race at Hawera. It was no surprise to find that the totalisator showed . a record betting race for Taranaki, Kilmoon being a warm favourite, with Marqueteur and Client next in order. It was a disappointing race, however, as the little-fancied Taiamai won from end to end. In the early stages Risingham hung on to the daughter of The Nut, the pair being eight or ten lengths ahead of the field at the half distance. Over the last half mile the field closed up a bit, but the Auckland mare was first into the straight, and went on to win

very comfortably from Kilmoon, which finished fast over the final two furlongs. It is probable that the win would not have been such an easy one had the riders of some of the others not expected the leader to come back to them, but she would have won in any case, judging by the fact that she carried an extra 141 b. on the second day and won again. She finished so full of running that the Hon. E. W. Alison’s mare is sure to be one of the fancied ones for the Wanganui Cup.

Kilmoon ran a good race, but Client, though he looked very well, was never in the fighting line, and finished last. He could not get going in the early stages, and the winner was so far in front when the son of Elevation settled down to it that he had no chance of making up his leeway. He will probably be all the better for the racing, and may show to more advantage at Wanganui, especially if the going is at all easy. Taiamai paid a very big price, and much the same “divy” was paid by Kilgour in the Waipapa Hack, while Marble Bar also returned her supporters a nice price.

Army Service and Vagrancepiece were both backed for over £lOOO in the Ladies’ Purse, and they ran first and second respectively, while the two most fancied of the others (Bold Boy and Cheer Up) ran third and fourth respectively. This event was for amateur riders, and some of the riding caused considerable amusement. Applaud lost his rider as the barrier rose.

The classic event, the Egmont Stakes, produced a field of five. Silver Link was made the hottest order of the day, Listowel being the outsider of the party. Mr. W. G. Stead started both Surveyor and Golden Bubble, the former, with H. Gray in the saddle, being the most fancied. It was a fine race. Silver Link essayed to win all the way, but was closely . followed by Listowel and Golden Bubble. When two furlongs had been traversed Golden Bubble was in front, but at the half distance Surveyor took command, and was two lengths clear of Silver Link when heads were turned for home. The colt more than held his own «ver the last bit, and won nicely. jHymestra came with a rattle, and was close up to Silver Link at the post, Listowel being next. Surveyor appeared to be lame on returning to the birdcage. There was a big field in the Waipapa Hack, Amberine being the popular pick, and she looked to be winning half-way down the straight, but the little-fancied Kilgour, coming with a burst, got home by a narrow margin, and paid a big price. Thirteen faced the barrier in the Whareroa Welter, for which Ermine claimed most support, though Old Gold and Pretty Bobby also carried a lot of coin. It was a heavy betting race. Ermine hopped away well, but Hushman then ran to the front, with Egmont Park next, followed by Ermine. Hushman cried enough at the distance, and a great finish was fought out between Ermine, Tiranga and Pretty Bobby, the former scoring by a very narrow margin from Tiranga. Pretty Bobby and Hushman following. The results were: — OHAWE HURDLES of 230sovs. One mile and three-quarters. 3 — Harvey Raynor’s b g Master Moutoa, aged, by Sarto —Branta, 11.13 (Bowden) 1 4 — J. TAIAMAI SCORES AGAIN. The meeting . was concluded on Thursday in splendid weather. There was again a record crowd, visitors being present from all parts of the country. The racing was again very interesting, some capital contests being fought out, the issue in several instances being in doubt up to the moment the judge’s box was passed. The Hawera Stakes resolved into a spirited contest between Hymestra and Moutoa Ivanova, the former winning bv a narrow margin. In leaving the mile behind in Imin. 41 3-ssec. Hymestra put up a record for the course. Mr. C. O’Connor was in fine form at the barrier, while Mr. T. Cameron ably 'filled the position of judge. The meeting was excellently managed by the secretary, Mr. V. B. Stratton, who was ably assisted by the vice-presi-dent, Mr. J. Gray, the work of the two gentlemen named going a long way towards making the gathering thoroughly successful and enjoyable. Racing was resumed with the running of the Okaiawa Hurdles, for which Movement was made a firm favourite. Zola, and Explorer were also solidly supported. The three named filled the places, Movement winning easily by a length from Explorer. with Zola a good ' third and

Fair Paul next. There were seven runners in the Waimate Handicap, Waimatao, Inah, and Lord Kenilworth all being well backed. Inah and Hushman made the early running, but Esthonia was first into the straight, and looked all over a winner until Lord Kenilworth came with a fast rattle and scored easily from Esthonia, Waimatao filling third place, and Justland close up. A judicial enquiry was held to inquire into the running of Lord Kenilworth compared with his first day’s efforts, when he was never prominent. After hearing evidence from those concerned the stewards came to the conclusion that there was nothing disclosed for them to take action. Army Service followed up his first day’s win by annexing the Farmers’ Plate, for which he was a good fav.ourite. He had not much difficulty in winning from Diamond Nap, Applaud just beating Marshal Neil. Her fine display in the Cup led to Taiamai being backed down to a short price for the Atkinson Memorial, in which she had 141 b. more than she carried to in the Cup. Kilmoon, Marqueteur* and Perfect Day each carried over £lOOO, the other two. starters, Client and Risingham, about £lOOO them. Perfect Day madq the early running, but Taiamai was always handy, and in a dingdong finish the Auckland horse got home by a length from Perfect Day. Kilmoon was third and Marqueteur fourth.

Twenty faced the starter in the Maiden, Cashmere and Guiniro being the two most in demand. Hori led to the straight, when Quiniro and

Listowel put in their claims, an exciting finish ending in Quiniro getting the verdict from Listowel. Hori filled third berth, Erin’s Isle gettingup fourth with a very fast run. Surveyor and Silver Link were not started in the Hawera Stakes, and Gazique was entrusted with most support, Hymestra being the next in demand. Ermine and Golden Bubble showed the way in the early stages, but Hymestra was in front five furlongs from home and led into the straight. He had to be hard ridden to defeat the fast-finishing Moutoa Ivanova, who was badly placed at the half-distance. Rose Queen got third and the favourite fourth. There were twenty starters in the Inaha Hack, Flying Master being the popular pick, the bracketed pair Egmont Park and Empyrean' being the second choi-ce. Flying Master soon hit the front and led till well into the straight, where he faded right out of the race, a slashing finish between Egmont Park, Passin’ Through and Prince Formby resulting in them passing the judge’s box in the order named, heads only separating them. Hallow was fourth.

The curtain was rung down on the meeting by the decision of the Normanby Welter, for which Bonnetter was sent out a hot favourite, and he never left the issue in doubt, Hushman, Hurry Up and Old Gold finishing in that order behind him. The principal winning owners were: Hon. E. W. Alison, £1295; W. G. Stead, £695; W. R. Kemball, £460; G. L. Stead, £345; J. Goring-Johnson, £220; H. Rayner, £205; S. G. Wilcock, £190; P.
