WELLINGTON NOTES.
“Lorgnette.”)
(By
WELLINGTON, February 9. It is almost certain that the next J. C. Williamson attraction for New Zealand will be the comedy drama, “Lightnin’.” It is said to be one of the most captivating plays ever staged in Australasia, and the more one sees of it the more enthusiasm is aroused. It is also stated that a more finished and capable actor than Mr. John D. O’Hara has never been seen on the Australasian stage. His quaint, quiet, mannerisms compel laughter and applause. He is a finished artist, and is supported by an all-round capable company. Mr. W. W. Wadman, who established the Fox film agency in Wellington in 1916, has again taken up the position of manager for New Zealand of that corporation. The Allan Wilkie Dramatic Company will open a return season at the Grand Opera House, Wellington, on March 6 with the London and English provincial success, “The Luck of the Navy,” from the pen of Clifford Mills. This will be followed by a new comedy, also two other London successes, entitled “The and
“A Temporary Gentleman.” It is gratifying to know that Miss Muriel Starr will play a farewell season in Wellington from February 21 to March 2 with “The Silent Witness,” “Common Clay,” and “Three Faces East.” . *
Before opening in Wellington the Allan Wilkie Dramatic Company will visit the following provincial towns: Feilding, February 12th; Taihape, 13th; Batea, 14th; Hawera, 16th to 19th; Waitara, 20th; Stratford, 21st; Eltham, 23rd; Inglewood, 24th; Wanganui, 25th to 28th; Masterton, March Ist.
There are few actors on the stage to-day as expert in the art of makeup as J. B. Atholwood. His Grisby in ‘The Silent Witness” is just another sample of his high-developed powers. “Unfortunately,” says J. 8., “the job doesn’t end there. The more dexterous you are with the paints the more nimble you have to be with your brain. For every layer of painted villainy you must assume a layer of mental villainy. The man who simply looks the part isn’t an actor. He’s just a hoarding,”
