WELLINGTON TROTTING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. Those who were present at the last meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club on the Hutt Park track were much impressed with the enthusiastic character of the afternoon’s proceedings, and there was a consensus of of opinion among patrons that a very successful time was ahead of this enterprising trotting body. Encouraged by the wide share of patronage extended their last fixture the officials of the Wellington- Trotting Club have adopted a progressive policy in connection with their next

meeting, which takes place at Hutt Park on Wednesday, January 21, the substantial sum of £l7OO being allotted in stakes for the eight events appearing on the afternoon’s programme. The remunerative stakes offered will undoubtedly attract entries from the leading trotting stables of the Dominion, and the South Island contingent which will be found competing at the three days meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club at the end of the present month will thus have an opportunity of fulfilling engagements at the Wellington Trotting Club’s fixture before being re-shipped across the Straits en route for their home quarters.

The principal event is the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup (harness) of 500sovs (a gold cup value lOOsovs and 400sovs in specie), two miles, in which event horses will be handicapped to do 4.44 or better. The President’s Handicap Trot (Harness) of

200sovs, two miles, .5.5 or better, and the Electric Handicap Trot (Harness) of 200sovs, one mile and aquarter, 2.58 or better, should both induce a liberal entry. Other harness events are the Wellington Handicap Trot of 150sovs, two miles, 5.10 or better, and the Hutt Park Trial Handicap of lOOsovs, one mile and a-half, 4.0 or better (for all horses that have never won a trotting race exceeding the value of 25sovs at time of nomination). Three saddle races are provided, the Borough Handicap Trot of 150sovs, one mile and a-half, 3.50 or better; Stewards’ Handicap Trot of 150sovs, one mile, 2.22 or better; and the Petone Handicap Trot of 150sovs, one mile and a-half (for unhoppled trotters only), 3.56 or better.

Nominations for all events, accompanied by fees, close with the secretary, Mr. R. W. Short, Box 4, Petone, on Friday, January 2, at 8 p.m. 'PURSE OFFERED FOR RECORD. The club offer a purse of lOOsovs to any horse breaking the Australasian grass mile record of 2min. 11 3-ssec. In the event of more than one horse competing for the record the horse establishing the best time under that stipulated will receive the prize. A flying start and pacemaker will be allowed.
