MANAWATU RACING CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING.

Mr. Henrys lost no time in getting out the weights for the summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club after the conclusion of the Feilding meeting, and they are instructive, as bearing to some extent on the weights for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap, so many horses being engaged in one or other of those races. In the Manawatu Cup, Snub has again been awarded the same weight as he received in the St. Andrew’s Handicap, over the same distance, viz., a mile and a-half. Snub is set to meet the following horses on better terms in the Auckland Cup than in the Manawatu Cup: Impediment lib., Client and Red Ribbon 21b., The Speaker 31b„ Uncle Ned 41b„ Tressida 51b., Marqueteur and Rose Pink 61b., Warstar 81b., but Mr. Henrys has Punka 31b. nearer to him, and Battle Song and Battle Array each 21b. closer. It will be interesting to note how owners view the position, but as First Salute has only been penalised 41b. for his win over Snub in the St. Andrew’s Handicap, it would appear that Mr. Henrys does not share in the opinion that First Salute’s win was so very decisive. In the Fitzherbert Handicap, Acre, who gave Croesus 31b. in the Oroua Stakes at Feilding after beating him in the Feilding Stakes, in which race they were split by the three-year-old Affectation, penalised 31b., is asked to give Croesus 91b., as against, 21b. in the Railway Handicap, though the 51b. penalty on Acre nearly equalises matters. Lingerie has 21b. more than in the Railway, and Jutland no less than 201 b. more ond Bonny Briar 81b., Statuette the same in both, and Philomela 31b. more in the Manawatu event. If it were between the horses that Mr. Henrys and Mr. McManemin have had to deal with Jutland would be Mr. Henrys’ tip on figures for the Railway, and Punka, Battle Array, Battle Song and Snub would be taken as his selections for the Auckland Cup, though he might perhaps have made a difference because of the extra distance if he had been handi-

capping for a two-mile event. The difference is very pronounced in the case of Jutland, who presumably was not seen at his best at Ellerslie when he ran there last month, due perhaps to the difference in the two courses and the right and left-handed ways of galloping. It may now seem that a liberty was taken in treating Jutland in the minimum impost in the Railway. The English-bred four-year-old, Arrowsmith, is in the Gillies Hack Race and Grandstand Handicap, and Woody Glen and Admiral Advance are in the Tararua Welter. Arrowsmith and Admiral Advance may race at Woodville next week, and. it will be interesting to note how they shape there and during their southern trip.
