The Auckland Railway Handicap candidates Onslaught, Philomela, Jut land, Croesus. Bonny Briar, Acre, Ermine and Lingerie are also engaged in the Fitzherbert Handicap (s’x fur’ongs), the chief sprint event on the first day (Boxing Day) of the Manawatu R.C.’s summer meeting. Sasanof and Lady Ball, who returned to Wellington from Australia last week and were shipped for their home at Napier, are to be given a spell from activity. Surveyor, who also accompanied the pair on their trip across the Tasman, will probably be on hand to contest the Great Northern Derby at Ellerslie on NewYear’s Day.
The win scored by Mythology in the Kingsdown Hack Welter Handicap provided the greatest reversal of form that was seen at the South Canterbury meeting (says the Lyttelton “T mes”). On the first day, in a seven-furlong race, he got all the best of the start, but after leading into the straight he faded out very rapidly. On the second day he lost some ground at the -start, but soon worked his way to a good position, and finished out a mile in great style, Inning with ridiculous ease, though he only beat Golden Crozier by a length.
