WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. NOTES ON INTENDING RUNNERS. (From Our Wellington Correspondent.) Monday. Very satisfactory acceptances have been received for the first day’s events of the Wellington R.C.’s Spring meeting, that takes place at Trentham on Thursday next. The fields engaged are considerably above the average, and in this connection Handicapper H. Coyle is to be congratulated upon the capital response that his adjustments have resulted in from owners. The surroundings at Trentham, including the lawns and racecourse proper, are very picturesque just now, and patrons of the Club’ will appreciate the efforts of the officials in seeing to everything having for its object the comfort and convenience of visitors to Trentham. Proceedings will commence with the running of the Seatoun Welter Handicap, of seven furlongs, which closed with eighteen acceptors. With recent form as a guide Bonnie Heather (Heather Mixture —Vere), if started, will probably go out favourite. This three-year-old gelding can gallop to some purpose, as was evidenced at Masterton last week. Several local horses are engaged, and the best of them. will probably prove’ to be Royal Exchange, who may be one of the placed division. The second race on the programme is the Taita Handicap, of four furlongs, which will see a number of useful juveniles sporting silk. Tessares, who was considered unlucky not to get the verdict at Wanganui, and Kildee (Kilbroney—Grey Linnet) and Strategy (Martian —Strathspey), the latter pair of whom are owned by Mr. A. (“Ngakanui”) McDonald, should be well fancied. Vagabond is in pride of place in the Wainui Handicap, one mile, and well deserves the carrying of number one saddle cloth. This horse should be improved by a race, and may do better on the concluding day. Lovematch, who claims a. N.Z. Cup engagement, is also engaged, and may give a good account of herself. In former years this event has been looked on as a guide to the N.Z. Cup, and Trainer T. F. Quinlivan has cause to remember this race as it has not infrequently served as a criterion of the prospects of those candidates also engaged in the b’g two mile event at Riccarton.' His present candidate. Lovematch, should acquit herself well. Twelve horses have accepted for the

Rimutaka Hack Handicap, of one mile. Bonnie Heather, who also claims an earlier engagement, should if reserved for the Rimutaka Handicap, take a prominent part in its decision.’ Moutoa Ivanova has a good horse’s weight, and may defeat all the others. Sixteen horses have been accepted for the Wellington Handicap, of one mile and three furlongs. Red Ribbon, who is at the top of the list, is very well just now and should show to advantage. The writer looks to Crenides, who acted as runner up to Affectation in the Wanganui Guineas, to keep his opponents busy. Of the others Warstar, who appeared backward at Levin, may be well up when the winning line is crossed. Quite a number of two-year-olds have made the first forfeits for the Wellesley Stakes, four furlongs. The full list at present totals thirty-eight, but this number will be considerably reduced on the day. Tessares (Demosthenes — Gold Thread), if reserved for this race, should run well, while Saima (Finland —Overall), is also entitled to considerable respect. The October Handicap, of six furlongs, for hacks, has attracted a big field of twenty-six acceptors, and the luck of the draw will go a long way in deciding the public’s fancy. Provided he draws a decent position Egmont Park, the full brother to Volume, should show up well. This horse is a quick beginner, and may run out the distance in good style. Sweet Memory, who scored at Masterton last week, is very smart over, six furlongs and may effect a surprise. The first day’s racing will be brought to a conclusion by the running of the Shorts Handicap, of six furlongs, for which 22 horses have accepted. The list includes many smart sprinters, and the race bears a very open appearance. Mr. A. McDonald has both Torfreda and Murihiku engaged, and the pair should be well fancied. Provided he is fit and well, Volo, notwithstanding his impost (9.5) should be in the front division when the winning line is crossed.
