HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. The report and balance-sheet for the past year presented at the annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club stated that since the termination of the war in November last the Government had allowed the racing clubs to resume their old racing permits, which resulted in the club having a two days’ steeplechase meeting, as against one day last year. Next year there would be seven days’ racing, as aganist five days during the period of reduction. The committee had again written 5 per cent, depreciation off buildings, and 7% per cent, off plant, which they hoped would meet with the approval of members. After providing for depreciation £1995 Is. and .an. increase of £1025 in stakes, there would be an amount of £22 6s< sd. to. be transferred to surplus assets. The training tracks, course and buildings had been maintained in good order. - For the office of president, Mr. H. Hassall, and for the ‘ two vice-presi-dents Messrs. J. S. McLeod and H. A. Russell, and for the honorary treasurer Mr. J. H. Colebourne were the only nominations, and they were therefore elected. The thanks of the

club were again due to Mr. A. M. Brodie, M.R.C.V.S., the hon. veterinary surgeon, and also to Mr. Robt. Stevens, the hon. timekeeper. In the unavoidable absence of Mr. Paul Hunter, the meeting was presided over by Mr. H. Hassall, who, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, congratulated members upon a successful past year, considering the disadvantages they had been under. One was the effect that the influenza epidemic had on the summer meeting, which was held at a time when, owing to the epidemic, people were very averse to travelling and to attending race meetings. As the members would see from the balance-sheet, the receipts were much better than for the previous year, while the stakes had been increased by £lOOO. He thought that in all the circumstances the club had much reason to congratulate itself. Several members referred to the splendid service that had been rendered the club by Mr. E . J. Watt during that gentleman’s residence in the Hawke’s Bay, and it was unanimously decided to appoint Mr. Watt a life honorary member of the club. The following committee was elected: —Messrs. H. M. Campbell, G. Ebbett, P. Hunter, M. Johnson, T. H. Lowry, W. Richmond, W. J. Stratton, J. O’Neill, W. G‘. Stead and E. J. White.
