AN AUCKLANDER’S PURCHASES FOR NEW ZEALAND.

Mr. Geo. Niccol, who recently returned from Sydney, informed the writer during the week that he is having the nine yearlings he purchased in Australia during the months of April and May fed and exercised daily. They have been ridden out and are being got ready to race later on, but beyond being taken out to the tracks and accustomed to surroundings do nothing in the shape of trial gallops - , so that they will come to New Zealand untried. Mr. Niccol has not nominated any of his purchases for classic races. He is satisfied that he has secured a good all-round lot. of youngsters. The following are some particulars about the lots: —A bay colt (23) by imported Prudent King, a splendid performer and son of Love Wisely, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup and Jockey Club Stakes, from Lady Liamsol, by Boar’s Head, son of Bay Ronald and Britannia, by Melton from Limasol, winner of the Oaks,. when she beat Chetandry, the dam of Neil Gow and imported Traquair. This colt is a first foal and will be two years old in October. The second lot purchased was a bay filly (2) by imported Piedmont from Nell Cwynne, sister to Cadonia, Mary Davies and Rameses, winners in Australia, by Prudent King, imported son of Love Wisely. This filly traces

back to the Musket mare Aurelia, who was from L’Orient, granddam of Impulse (New Zealand Cup) and Uhlan, Auckland Cup winners, Daunt, Dauntless and other good horses, and dam of Mana and Radames. This filly was foaled on November 1. Piedmont is a son of Marco and comes of the same family line as Desmond, Martagon and Ormonde. Then there is a bay colt (3) by Gunpowder, a son of Hotchkiss and Hermosa’s sister St. Elyn, by St. Leger from Lady Evelyn. The colt’s dam, Pampero, is sister to Deucallion and Master Hova, with winners, by Hova, the best son of Ingomar and a first-class racehorse, from Tradewind, dam of a number of winners, by Progress, son of Angler, tracing back to the same family as Gladsome, Apologue, St. Leger, and numerous high-class horses. A brown filly comes next, by Varco (imp.) from Lady Rouvray (1), a winner and half-sister to Fancy Vest, also a winner, by imported Rouvray (St. Simon) from Lady Medallion. Varco is the sire of numerous good winners in Australia. The last tw'o lots are early foals, both having been dropped on September 6. The next is a brown filly by Malster from San Dove (21), half-sister to Barley Brae, Broadacre, and other winners in Australia, from Grand Dove, by Grand Flaneur. This is a November foal. Another filly of the same colour is by imported Flippant from Glissas (2), a good performer in England in minor races and sister to winners and halfsister to Glass Queen, the dam of Wallace Isinglass, who is one of the

few that have beaten Desert Gold. Glissas was got by William the Third, a great racehorse and sire, from Queen Gold, a winner. This is a November foal. A brown colt (8), also by Flippant (imp.), is from Linere, by Pistol (imp.), son of Carbine and a great sire in Australia, from Liane, sister to Linacre, by Wolf’s Crag, and a leading sire in Australia for several seasons past. Linacre was a brilliant racehorse in England. This colt is a November foal and the first of his dam’s progeny. Flippant, sire of the two preceding lots, is three-quarter brother to Bronzino, by Marcovil, son of Marco from Flitters, by Galopin. The bay colt (3) is a half-brother to Hartfell, Ayr Lassie and Gai, three good winners in Australia, and is by Charlemagne IL, a highly successful sire, from Lightheart, by Musk Rose, by Musket from Brightheart, dam of winners, by Precious Stone from Ace of Hearts, by Ace of Clubs. A lot of winners have come from this branch in Australia. This colt was foaled October 5. The bay colt (2) is by Charlemagne 11. (imp.) from Femina Plume, half-sister to Bratiano and Language (good winners), by Grafton, a leading sire of classic and long-dis-tance race winners in Australia, from Braw Lassie, by Wallace, sire of Patrobus, Emir, Lady Wallace. Mountain King, Trafalgar and many of the best performers in Australasia. This colt was foaled October 4, and completes the list.
