THE MEMORABLE HUI AT THE PARK RACECOURSE, GISBORNE, IN CELEBRATION OF THE RETURN FROM ACTIVE SERVICE OF THE EAST COAST TRIBAL MEMBERS OF THE MAORI PIONEER BATTALION. THE HUI COMMENCED ON THE TUESDAY AND WAS EXTENDED OVER THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK. THE ILLUSTRATION SHOWS A POI DANCE IN PROGRESS, WHILE IN ADDITION TO THE CUSTOMARY HAKAS AND WAR DANCES, VARIOUS TIME-HONOURED MAORI CEREMONIALS WERE HELD, INCLUDING THE INSEPARABLE TANGI IN COMMEMORATION OF THOSE BRAVE MAORIS WHO HAD MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR.
