AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY. Weather conditions were of the most favourable, as were others, for the conclusion of the Auckland Trotting Club’s autumn meeting on Wednesday. There was a fine attendance and the racing was good all through. The track was a little faster than on the first day, and as is invariably the case many of the horses travelled a bit faster than they had been able to do on the opening day. Cathedral Chimes was one of them, and his attempt to lower the two-mile record, held by Country Belle on the same course, was a bold one, though it did not succeed. The son of Four Chimes was well paced by a galloper ridden by A. Julian, who is all at home in that line. J. Bryce was satisfied with the condition of the track, which at this season of the year could hardly be much better. Though possibly with a clearer atmosphere at summer time a little better might have been done, still the performance was one full of merit. He stepped the first half-mile in Imin. 5 2-ssec., the second in Imin: 4 l-ssec., making 2min. 9 3-ssec. for the first mile; the mile and a-half in 2min. 15 4-ssec., and the full distance in 4min. 24 4-ssec., the last half thus taking much the longest time. There was no wind and the dust was well laid. More favourable conditions at the time of year could hardly be experienced. Country Belle’s 4min. 22 4-ssec. on the same track still stands, but the two performances are respectively the best done by mare and horse. J. Bryce got a fine reception on returning to the paddock and when the time was hoisted. There were a number of excellent performances during the afternoon, several of them of a surprise nature, and the result of the very first race, won by Koscray, handled by J. Bryce, was rather unexpected. Roscray was somewhat lucky, as Tiki, who ran the roan mare to half a length, broke at a critical stage and galloped over the line. This led to a protest from the owner of Hal Junior, the third horse, who was handy, but as it did not really affect the result the placings of the judge were not disturbed. Backers thus got a good dividend to start off with. The Dillon family was strongly represented in the next race, the Manukau Handicap, which went to the third fancy, Halswell Dillon, in a field of seven, Confusion, the fourth fancy, running second, with the favourite, Dillon, third. The winner made the best time, and the placed horses each did a lot faster than they were handicapped to do. The combination Pitiroa and Willie Lincoln received most support for the Prince of Wales Handicap, Asturio and Waverley being nearly equally supported. Harold Devon, also wqll backed, was well out in front for most of the journey, but Asturio, Lieutenant and Alf. McKinney gathered him up in the last three furlongs, Asturio winning nicely and covering the distance in 4min. 36 4-ssec. The pace set by Harold Devon was too fast for the back-mark pair, Willie Lincoln and Waverley, and had Steel Bell and Cathedral . Chimes started neither could have had any chance at their handicaps. Greta was the favourite for the Autumn Handicap, and after Rejoice had led for two-thirds of the distance Ruanui drew up to libr. Greta began badly, but getting to work over the concluding stages she passed Ruanui and won by a length, with Sundial a dozen lengths away, third. Manuka Park was a strong fancy for the Adams Memorial Handicap, Inwood, also well backed, being next in demand, with Lucille, Prince Pool and Wilding next the two last-named equally supported. Manuka Park and Inwood appeared to be disputing supremacy down the straight, but they were tiring, and Wilding, wandering on, camo and won by nearly three lengths, this being the second win for her driver during the afternoon. Blackthorn was better supported than Wonderland and King Capitalist for the Members’ Trot. The firstnamed should have won outright, but his driver was apparently over confident, and N. Cunningham getting a bit more out of Hint than was expected the pair finished in line, Old Kirikiriroa. the outsider of the field, being only three lengths away, trotting quite up to his best previous form. Gold Boy and Wonderland were next, the first-named registering a very good performance from his mark. A favourite was made of Trooper Dillon for the Liverpool Handicap, but

Derby Dillon and Inwood ran him close in the betting, while Alf. McKinney was also very well supported. It was a good race for second and third places between Alf. McKinney and Inwood, but the favourite held all the cards and led all the way, winning by three lengths. Old Eccentric was running in a handy position for a mile but then died out. This made Cunningham’s third success and a dead-heat. Dorothy Dimple was favourite for the Farewell Handicap, with Goodrich and Prince Akwood next in request and then Comedy Chief. It was a good race, but Lucille managed to lead Comedy Chief a length over the concluding stage after being in front most of the way, Dorothy Dimple being less than a length off, third, with Prince Akwood and Galvanito next. Lucille paid the best dividend of the meeting, just over the old-time limit. The sum of £26,710 10s. was handled at the totalisators, arid this, with £27,963 put through the first day, brought the total for the two days to £54,673 10s. This, compared with the two days’ meeting in 1917, gives a very large increase. Last year the meeting was a one-day one.
