MASTERTON RACING CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING. PACIFIC SLOPE WINS CHIEF EVENT. (From Our Masterton Correspondent.) Although it did not appear from the list of acceptances that the above meeting would be as successful as usual, the attendance of the public was well up to the average, and an interesting day’s sport was provided. The fields during the day were small, in only two cases sufficient horses starting to make a second dividend. The track was very hard, and the lawns and enclosures bore a very burnt up appearance. The leading event of the day was won by Pacific Slope, and the son of California —Helene saw a. short price, odds-on being laid on his chance to win. The Flying Handicap saw only two horses face the starter, the winner, Chimera, being backed down to a very short price. The gathering passed off without any unpleasant feature, and the stewards were not called upon to hear anv enquiry. Mr. W. Armstrong was making his first appearance in the judge’s box for the club, and his decisions were well received. The secretary, Mr. A. Hathaway, and his assistants had everything in fine working order, and the totalisator staff were quick in putting up the dividends. During the afternoon the sum of £1 8,357 10s. was passed through the machine , which must be considered satisfactory. The scratching of Contand, Clever Mary, Half Time, Wai- Baby, Demades, Princess Charming, Murihiku and Probate left a. field of four to go to the post in the opening event, the Trial Stakes. The Highden representative, Negligee, was a hot favourite, with Hyades second choice. The start was a bad one, the favourite and Misslass being left half a dozen lengths. Printemps and Hyades raced together in front till well into the straight,- when Negligee made up a lot of lost ground and was ridden hard to overtake the leaders, but although she passed Hyades in the straight, Printemps went on full of running and won by a good length. All the starters were two-year-olds.

A field of five started in the Telephone Hack Handicap, the only withdrawal being Dainty Step. Vascovia, after her easy win at - Tauherenikau, was favourite, with Transmission and. Matatua next in public favour. The horses left the barrier in line, and raced together for a furlong, when Matatua went out in front and was followed by Tuticorn and Vascovia. The field closed on the leader when the straight was reached, but Matatua was' going along nicely and lasted long enough to stall off a strong challenge by Tuticorn and the favourite, passing the post with three-parts of a length to the good from Vascovia, with Tuticorn a head away. Although only a couple of horses faced the starter in tlie Flying Handicap, over £lOOO was invested on the machine. Mr. O’Connor let the pair away to a moving start, and Chimera went out with a length and a-half lead, which she maintained till well down

the straight, when Comment closed up the gap, and at the distance there was nothing between them. However, Corlett shook Chimera up a chain from the winning post, and Mr. Vallance’s- mare won by a neck. Chimera is at her best just now, and is likely to win a more important event before long. Over £3OOO was invested on the totalisator in the Autumn Handicap, one mile and a-quarter. The scratching of Hydrus . and Altercation reduced the field to six. A splendid start saw Loyal Arch momentarily in front, with the others in a line. Cooing and Multaine were with Loyal Arch over the first mile, witli Pacific Slope in a handy position on the rails. On entering the home turn the favourite got an opening, and came through to win easily by a little over a length, witli Multaine, Loyal Arch and Cooing locked together. The judge placed Multain second and Loyal Arch and Cooing a. dead heat for third place. The first four horses finished in the order of favouritism on the machine.

Both Missgold and Magistrate were better favourites in. the Juvenile Handicap than the Riddiford bracket, Chaeronia and Maroune. From an excellent start Chaeronia was the first to become prominent, closely followed by Missgold and Magistrate. They raced in this order down the straight, and Magistrate, on the rails, and Missgold, on the outside, were hard ridden to overtake the leader, but the daughter of Demosthenes and Formality kept her position to the winning post, having the best part of a length to spare at the finish. War Baby, trained by G. Price, was soon at the rear of the field and never got near the leaders. The winner paid a good price considering her forward running at the Wairarapa meeting the week previous. Red Signal, who had an engagement later in the day, was withdrawn from the Masterton Hack Handicap, as also was Vascovia, which had started previously. This left four to go to the pocl, favouritism resting with Momac, with Manu second choice. The pair mentioned drew away from an even start, and had. Penury Rose as nearest attendant over the first few furlongs. Consultation moved up entering the straight, and passed the leaders al. the distance, going on to win rather easily from Momac, with Penury Rose a head away third. This was the second win of Mr. W. Smart's colours during the afternoon. Manu was a good way back.

Six faced the starter in the Stewards’ Handicap, the withdrawals being Hydrus, Sweet Tipperary, Altercation and Otara. Favouritism rested with Red Signal, with Galore and Comment next in demand. The latter was making her second appearance, and the previous race had evidently improved her, as she went to the front soon after the Held got going, and was never headed, passing the post a good length in advance of Galore. Kiltess was a length off third, followed by Red Signal. Gold Soult was on his good behaviour till the barrier went up, when he jumped back and took no part in the race. Revocation was the last to finish. R. Reed rode the winner, making his third success during the day. The concluding event, the Dash Hack Handicap, was an interesting race, and the five runners were in line half-way down the straight. Stutter was a good favourite, Gold Problem and Contand following in public favour. Gold Problem drew No. 1 and hopped out smartly, followed by Toddy and Stutter. The field drew together at the distance, where Contand put in a good run and went on with Gold Problem, and the latter had to be shaken up to withstand her winning by the narrowest of margins.
