In attempting to stamp out the cruel and dishonest practice of doping, reputedly so prevalent on our racecourses, the stewards are doing a good and brave thing (says the Perth “Sunday Times”), and it is to be hoped that they will persevere with their efforts in the interests of the unfortunate horses and of the sport itself. After the last race of the W.A.T.C. meeting on January 25 they ordered a veterinary examination of Ambrian, the winner, and Epsilon, the third horse. The vet. took samples of saliva from both horses arid submitted them to the analyst. As a result of the report, the stewards decided to take no action with regard to Ambrian, but disqualified F. O’Brien, the trainer and lessee of Epsilon, and the horse itself for life. We urge the stewards to continue the campaign they have set afoot, and to light after jockeys who ride “electrifying finishes” also. How about ordering some of these manikins to strip every now and then?
