CONCLUDING DAY.

MELEE WINS CHIEF HANDICAP. GLOAMING AGAIN SUCCESSFUL. (Bv Tele. —Wellington Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. For the concluding day of the meeting to-day there was fine weather and a large '.attendance, while the music discoursed by the N.Z. Native Association Band was keenly appreciated. The track was in good order and the racing throughout was decidedly interesting, some capital finishes being fought out. The totalisator receipts amounted to £64,047, as against £56,954 for the concluding day of the last summer meeting, making a total for the fixture of £119,196 10s., as compared with £102,123 10s. last year, an increase of £17,073. Red Signal was favourite for the opening event, the Mangaroa Welter, while Retard was also well fancied. The former was always handy, and after Risingham had made the running to well within the straight Red Signal appeared on the scene, and, nicely handled by H. Gray, won by half a length from Retard, with Risingham a similar distance away, third, and Momac fourth. The January Welter was a runaway race for Comment, who, hopping out smartly when the tapes were skied, led all the way, and won easily by three lengths from Hyttus, with Bagdad two lengths away, third. Hendra, who had the services of H. Gray and was sent out favourite, was fourth. Affectation, who was coupled with Rose Wreath in the Fitzherbert Handicap, was the first to break the line, and holding her position throughout won by a length from Fluency, with Motuihi third, Rose Wreath being close up, fourth. The bracketed pair Menelaus and Mascot were the elect of backers in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, and after flattering their supporters for the major portion of the journey, they began to drift to the rear. Melee and Rewi Poto led at the turn, when the former made a dash for the lead, and stalling off a strong challenge thrown out by Rewi Poto, the Martian gelding won by a length from the black son of Maniapoto, with Heathercote a similar distance away, third. Menelaus, who had made up some leeway, was fourth. Excellent time was put up by Gloaming in the Kelburn Plate, the crack three-year-old leading throughout and leaving the four furlongs behind in 46 2-ssec. Surveyor ran a clinking race, and was second, while Crenides was close up, third. Gloaming carried over £3OOO on his prospects on the machine, and the dividend returned was a small quantity. There were no scratchings in the Douro Cup, all of the eleven acceptors going to the post, Afterglow, Robur and Palm Oil carrying four figures each on the totalisator. From an excellent start, Active, attended by Cooing, was the first to show out. Entering the straight the field closed up, with Active still showing up well, and Palm Oil coming fast. In the final pinch Palm Oil, capably handled by M. McDonald, prevailed nicely by ' a head from Active, with Cooing a neck away, third, the remainder being bunched just behind the placed division.

There was some heavy wagering in the Metropolitan Handicap, Acre, Kilboyne, and 80-Peep all carrying over four figures each on the tote. The colours of 80-Peep, Kilboyne and Birkenvale were prominent until the straight was entered, when Silver Link could be seen improving her position, and galloping resolutely she caught the leaders, and in a splendid finish won by a length and a-half from Kipling, who ran a game race, while Damien, who was well fancied by her connections, was half a length away, third.

Hymarty and Moorabbe were heavily supported for the concluding event, the Camp Handicap, while Rebekah, owned by Mr. J. J. Corry, the Mayor

of Blenheim, carried over a thousand pounds on her prospects on the tote. The field was bunched entering the straight, where Fulica held a slight advantage. When well in a line for the winning-post, Rebekah and Moorabbe singled themselves out, and in a ding-dong finish the former won by a length, with Astinom e a similar distance away, third.
