MANAWATU TROTTING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING.

Perfect weather prevailed for the Manawatu Trotting Club’s annual gathering, which took place on the Awapuni racecourse on December 28 in the presence of a large attendance. In a number of instances the fields were on the small side, but this did not detract in any material degree from, the interest of the racing, some excellent finishes being witnessed, the Ladies’ Bracelet in particular providing a stirring struggle. The principal event, the Manawatu Trotting Cup, was won by Mr. J. H. Lloyd’s horse, Hal Junior, who was second favourite and started from the limit mark. At the conclusion of the race the valuable cup,’ presented by Mr. Geo. Craw to the winner, was handed to Mr. Lloyd by Mr. R. A. McKenzie amid much enthusiasm, the victory being a popular one. W. Jones, who drove Hal Junior, was the recipient of a gold-mounted whip donated by two patrons of the club. Mr. H. Davey, of Christchurch, stipendiary steward, was present, but there were no unsavoury incidents to engage his attention. The secretary, Mr. A. H. Manson, did everything possible to ensure the comfort and enjoyment of the club’s patrons, and his capable management of the gathering left nothing to be desired. The totalisator investments amounted to £10,344, as against £18,803 at the previous year’s meeting. Jimmy Richmond, a four-year-old son of Havoc, found most favour for the opening event, the Maiden Handicap, with Conscript, Peace and Albert Patch best supported of the other seven starters. The favourite, who was on the limit, left his mark smartly, and attended by Conscript led past the stand, and was well in advance of his field going along the back. Jimmy Richmond still had several lengths’ advantage of Conscript as the straight was entered, and though Albert Patch made a big effort to reach the leaders, the favourite passed the post a two lengths’ winner from Conscript, Albert Patch being a fair third.

The Stewards’ Handicap brought out only two starters, Kate Zolock arid Warlock, the former being a hot favourite. Kate Zolock quickly opened up a gap from her opponent, and led all th e way, scoring an easy victory. A field of four contested the Manawatu Trotting Cup, the quartette being backed in the order named: Peter Mac, Hal Junior, Nancy Stair and King Capitalist. Starting from the limit Hal Junior never allowed his opponents to get -within striking distance, winning without being extended by a dozen lengths from Nancy Stair with the favourite third. The first saddle event, the Linton Handicap, attracted just sufficient starters to ensure a second dividend, Koraki being accorded most support, with Nancy Wilks and Rotomanuka best backed of the others. Speculator was leading the favourite passing the stand the first time, but Koraki was in front entering upon the back stretch, and maintaining his advantage to the finish registered a comfortable win from Bobbie 8., with Rotomanuka a length and a-half away third.

A septette came out to contest the Ladies’ Bracelet, Reindeer being elected favourite, while Jewell Wood and The Weaver also claimed solid support. Jewell Wood was the early pilot, but was soon displaced in the lead by Warlock, who had a couple of lengths’ advantage of Reindeer going along the back stretch. The pair entered th e straight on terms, and a battle royal was witnessed in the run to the post; victory going to Warlock by a head amid great excitement. Jewell Wood was a moderate third.

Hayseed was most in demand of the four starters in the Christmas Handicap, but the best he could do was to finish third. Linotype was in front over the first half-mile, when Eagle Abbey took up the running and was never headed, scoring an easy victory by four lengths* from Linotype.

A quintette faced the starter in the Palmerston North Handicap, Wonderland being a warm favourite, with Koraki second choice. The latter set off in the lead, but was soon passed by Wonderland, who had charge from Rio Grande and Koraki passing the stand the first time. The favourite increased his lead going along the back, and ran home a comfortable winner by 50 yards from Koraki, with Rio Grande third. A warm favourite in Waiteranui was defeated by the outsider, Nancy Stair, in a field of five which con-

tested the President’s Handicap. The favourite, in company with Bundong, piloted the field in the early stages, but approaching the entrance to the straight Nancy Stair, who was nicely handled by W. Warren, took charge, and never gave the favourite a chance in the run home, winning by four lengths. Peter Mac was third.
