MANAWATU RACING CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING.

NOBLEMAN WINS CUP.

Favoured with fine weather the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer carnival was opened at the Awapuni course on Boxing Day under ideal conditions, and the prospects of some keen racing attracted a very large crowd, including visitors from all of the leading provinces in the North Island. Those present were rewarded with a highly enjoyable afternoon’s sport, large efilds going to the post, and with the track in excellent order a number of close finishes were provided, while in every instance the events proved of a most interesting character, The secretary, Mr. J. M. Johnston, had the arrangements essential for the success of the meeting well in hand, and the afternoon’s proceedings were carried out with commendable smoothness and precision. The judge’s box was occupied by Mr. J. H. Perrett, who acted for the club in that capacity for the first time, and his placings, which left no room for doubt regarding their accuracy, were hoisted promptly in every instance. M. A. Keith had some big fields to contend with, but this did not prevent him from despatching them in a fair and even manner. The Manawatu Cup resulted in a splendid contest, victory going to Mr. W. J. Phillips’ Sir Laddo gelding, Nobleman, who also annexed the event last year and later on won the Wellington Cup. Favourites fared badly during the afternoon, Affectation being the only one to score, Mr. J. E. Henrys having set backers a difficult problem.

The totalisator investments amounted to £40,240, as against £48,401 on Boxing Day 1917.

There were no defections from the Trial Plate, in which 19 faced the starter, Mr. F. Easton’s Moutoa Ivanova being installed favourite, with Utuwai, Sacramento and Esperance best supported of the others. Papanui led from Yankee Jack in the early stages, but th e Highden three-year-old Hurry Up was in charge entering the straight, and though challenged by Yankee Jack won comfortably, Papanui finishing third. The 18 acceptors for the Tokomaru Hurdles were reduced in number to 11 as the result of late scratchings, the Wanganui representative Zola claiming most attention, with Kurapai, Vacuum and Ore Ore most in request of the other candidates. The last-named was leading as the field passed the stand, but was displaced by Zola going out of the straight, with First Line and Lord Nelson racing at the head of the others. Going along the back stretch Waipunoa improved his position and was on terms with the leaders entering the straight. In the run to the post Waipunoa quickly had the favourite’s measure, and ran home an easy winner by a couple of lengths, Lord Nelson being third and Kurapai fourth.

Despite his indifferent running at the Avondale meeting, the topweight, Kipling, claimed most supporters for the Gillies Hack Handicap, Red Signal, Penury Rose, Ahika (who was bracketed with Gold Problem) and Mill Queen all coming in for solid support. King’s Armour and Mill Queen made the pace a cracker, leading to the straight entrance, where they were joined by Ahika, a good finish, in which Cotillion put in her claim, resulting in favour of Ahika by a head from King’s Armour, with Cotillion third.

All of the ten acceptors for the Manawatu Cup paraded for that event, the Fordell representative, Client’, being a better favourite than last year’s winner, Nobleman, with Battle Song, Dusky Eve and Detroit most in request of the others, Rewi Poto and Master Moutoa being the outsiders of the field. The last-named was first away when the barrier rose, with Multive, Nobleman and Ladogeur as his nearest attendants. Ladogeur was in command as the field passed the stand, with Master Moutoa, Multive and Nobleman racing in that order,

the favourite being last. Battle Song led out of the straight from Ladogeur and Nobleman, this trio showing the way along the back. Nobleman went to the front at the bend into the straight, with Dusky Eve close up, followed by Dewi Poto and Client, the latter pair being discerned making up l their leeway in tradesmanlike style. A great race ensued to the post, Nobleman, capably handled by B. Morris, hanging on to his task with commendable gameness and scoring a popular victory by a length from Dusky Eve, a similar distance after whom came Rewi Poto, with Client fourth. Sixteen were saddled up for the Juvenile Handicap, the Kilbroney— Simper two-year-old colt Affectation being a better favourite than Oratress, while Bonny Briar and Marula were both in demand with backers. The favourite shot out smartly when the tapes lifted, and in company with Asterina showed the way into the straight. Here Bonny Briar, Idleness and Sycorax put in their respective claims, but had no chance with Affectation, on whom R. S. Bagby scored a comfortable victory by a length from Bonny Briar, with Sycorax third and Idleness next. The Tararua Hack Welter attracted 13 runners, Moutoa Camp being favourite, with Signorella, Army Service, and First Salute next best fancied. War Scot showed out in front momentarily, but when the field settled down Idle alk was in charge, with Quinn’s Post and Rienzi most prominent of the others. Racing into the straight Rienzi closed on the leaders, and, hard ridden, he managed to shake off a determined challenge from Idle Talk, whom he defeated by a head after an exciting finish. Manu, who came with a late run, just got up in time to defeat Army Service for third place. Mr. G. F. Hardy supplied the favourite for the Fitzherbert Handicap in the speedy Croesus, after whom Torfreda, ere, Inah,' Pennon and Nystad were most .fancied in a sterling betting race. Croesus was soon at the head of affairs when the field were, despatched, Inah, Nystad and Pennon being his nearest attendants, the last-named shooting to the front at the home bend and leading to 100 yards from th epost, where Nystad drew on terms, and in a good finish the Highden candidate defeated Pennon by a length, Croesus, who ran a splendid race, being a close third, and 80-Peep fourth. . Galore, Elocution and Rude were the more fancied trio for the Grandstand Handicap, being supported in the order named, a dozen facing the barrier. Hyginas and Galore were the early leaders, and once the real test commenced Hydrus asserted himself, outpacing Hyginas in the run to the judge’s box and gaining a length victory. Multaine, who finished with a great burst of speed, was third. The results were: — TRIAL PLATE of 150sovs. Seven furlongs. 7—J. DUSKY EVE WINS BIG EVENT. 80-PEEP ANNEXES PALMERSTON STAKES. Ideal weather was experienced on Friday for the concluding day of the Manawatu R.C.’s summer meeting, and the attendance was again large. The track was conducive to fast times, and with good fields in every event the club’s patrons were treated to some high-class racing, several exciting finishes being witnessed. The Fordell candidates Acre and Rude were the only actual favourites to salute the judge during the afternoon, though well-backed horses accounted for every race during the afternoon, the public faring fairly well in their encounter with the totalisator, three of the favourites returning second money. The totalisator staff handled £36,139, as against £42,461 for the corresponding day last year, making a total of £76,379, as compared with £90,862 last year. The twelve acceptors all faced the starter in the Kelvin Handicap, Manu being favourite, with First Salute, Penury Rose and Army Service all in brisk demand. Cooing was first to find her feet, but War Scot soon headed her, with Signorella and Willys Knight most prominent of the others. Signorella was first to turn

for and in the run to the post Courtfield and Penury Rose put in their claims, the former winning an exciting race by a neck from Penury Rose, with Cooing a length away, third. Signorella was fourth.

Zola was elected favourite for the Te Matai Hurdles, with Waipunoa and Arlington best supported oi the other eight runners. Arlington took the lead from the barrier rise, with First Line, Otara and Zola as his nearest attendants. The favourite was in second position passing the stand, where Waipunoa came down, his rider, A. Ward, receiving severe injuries to his chest, and as a result was conveyed to the hospital. Arlington continued to lead from Zola going along the back, and maintained his advantage to the judge’s box, gaining a comfortable two lengths’ victory from the favourite, Ore Ore being third and First Line fourth.

The Highden Hack Handicap saw the good iieid of 17 fulfil their engagements, Cotillion being the prime selection of backers, with Red Signal, Ztibism and Gold Problem all in keen demand. The last-named hopped out smariiy\ attended by Tuticorn and Cotillion, and never giving his opponents a chance won easily by a length irom Cotnnon, who defeated Red Signal tor second honours. Mill Queen was fourth,

Nine came out to do battle in the President’s Handicap, the public making Rewi Poto a pronounced favourite, with Ladogeur, Dusky Eve and Detroit next best backed in that order. Galore set a merry pace m the early stages, with Classification as her nearest attendant, the latter assuming control going along the back. Classification led into the straight, where Dusky Eve and Hydrus were quickly on terms with the nve-year-old daughter of All Black. Dusky Eve had most in reserve when the serious part of the journey came to be negotiated, and finishing on well he easily shook off Hydrus, whom he defeated by two and a-half lengths, Classification being a length and ahalf away, third, and Rewi Poto fourth. Torfreda and Asterina were withdrawn from the Palmerston Stakes, in which there were nine starters. Croesus was a good favourite, being followed in the betting by 80-Peep and Nystad. The favourite assumed the lead when the tapes lifted, with 80-Peep, Nystad and Affectation well in advance of the other candidates. The favourite led to the entrance to the straight, where he was headed by 80-Peep, who had no difficulty in defeating the half-brother to Desert Gold by a length, Nystad being third, and Affectation fourth.

Fifteen was the main for the Terrace Hack Welter, in which Philomela met with most support, Hurry Up, Moutoa Camp and Utuwai also being well backed. Some Girl was the first to begin, with Utuwai at the head of the others, but once into the straight Hurry Up made a forward move, and, capably handled by R. Reed, won comfortably by two lengths from Namur, who was half a length in advance of Warrawee. Battle Array was fourth. Eight well-performed sprinters lined up .at the barrier for the Awapuni Handicap, the Fordell representative, Acre, being a solid favourite, with Inah and Waimatao best supported of the others. The public’s summing up of the position was accurate to a degree, as after Waimatao and Inah had taken turns at pace-making, Acre dashed into the lead once the distance was reached, and finishing well gained a two lengths’ victory from Inah, a length after whom came Waimatao. Damien was fourth.

Eleven were saddled up for the Camp Handicap, favouritism being accorded Rude, with Multaine, All Over and Hyginas fancied next in that order. Hyginas led over the first half-mile from the favourite, the latter then taking charge and winning easily from the son of Hymettus— Paean. Glorify was close up, third, and Bagdad fourth. R. Bagby and B. Morris, headed the list of successful horsemen at the meeting with three wins each, while A. Reed, C. Price and M. McLean rode two winners apiece. A. McDonald, W. Bell, J. Kaan and R. Reed each saluted the judge on one occasion.
